Missouri bill would require father's permission for a woman to get an abortion

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.

A bill filed this month would require pregnant women to get permission from the father before having an abortion except in cases of incest and what the Missouri Republican who sponsored the legislation called "legitimate rape."

If passed, state Rep. Rick Brattin's bill would require women to obtain notarized written permission from the father to terminate a pregnancy. The mandate would be waived for rape and incest. An identical bill by the Harrisonville lawmaker died in committee last session.

"Just like any rape, you have to report it, and you have to prove it," Brattin told Mother Jones in a statement that drew criticism from state Democrats. "So you couldn't just go and say, 'Oh yeah, I was raped,' and get an abortion. It has to be a legitimate rape."

Yes. I read it wrong the first time.

Also, ironically, often it is the father of the child that is pressuring the woman to abort. Would getting his “permission” be an opening for him to do more pressuring of the woman? I don’t know.

OTOH, I have known men who tried to talk their girlfriend out of killing their child. Those guys would have loved to be able to stop the process by not giving their permission. And yes, they were willing to take sole custody of the baby.

Equality Now!

A better headline would be: Father must give permission when mother wants to kill their baby.

I believe it. If this article is somewhat truthful then Brattin is a total idiot and we need a Republican that has some sense to him.

He seems to know nothing at all about rape, much less statutory rape, which is the common reason young girls, not women have abortions.

If the female doesn’t want to get permission from the father, she can just get any male to sign it and claim he was the father.

Problem is that is usually what happens! The man abusing the girl takes her to the clinic and says he is her father! Well duh! This Rep. Rick Brattin is a total idiot!

There should be a law saying that any girl under the age of 17 who seeks an abortion, that the clinic has to report it to CPS!! Know what I am saying?

This will be struck down, but I was always wondering about some kind of state marriage licensing procedure during which a woman would be required to make a choice - either agree that any decision to terminate a pregnancy resulting from that marriage would need to be a joint decision, OR agreeing that her husband, in the event of a divorce, would be free of any child support obligations AND would, barring any extraordinary circumstances, receive preferential treatment should he want custody of the child.

Something like that would be fair, since it is giving a woman a choice (hence it’s pro-”choice - ha ha)! If a woman wants to exclude her husband from these decisions, then at the very least he should be free of any consequences of that decision (i.e. child support). And since denying the husband any say in such a decision would generally indicate that the wife is less committed to her future family than is the husband, I think the preferential treatment in custody cases would also make sense.

And again, the woman would have a choice - so could something like that possibly be upheld?

According to Brattin she would have to file a police report and prove she was raped. Not sure how she'll be expected to do that.

Will they be hiring Whoopi Goldberg as their “Rape-Rape Czar” to make the determination?

I have been in front of abortion clinics where the father is driving his daughter to the appointment. I nearly got attacked by one father who was spitting mad at the thought that he could not take his daughter inside for the procedure without being accosted by somebody else’s conscience.

Too many loopholes here, and it’s way too complicated. Here’s the best fix: Get the baby’s permission to abort it.

except in cases of incest and rape

Why, that's 99% of abortions right there, isn't it? After all, that's the whole justification for abortion.

Pro-Baby: "I'm opposed to abortion."

Anti-Baby: "What about cases of rape and incest??!!"
