Faith in Apple’s future as Woz becomes an Aussie
Financial Review ^ | Thursday, December 18, 2014 | Paul Smith

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has officially become an Australian resident, is planning to make the Apple Isle his home – appropriately enough – and says one day he’d like it said he lived and died an Australian. The man who formed Apple with Steve Jobs in California back in 1976 has just had “permanent residency” stamped in his passport.

He originally applied for Australian citizenship in 2012. He’s since taken steps to move more aspects of his life Down Under; in October he became an adjunct professor at the University of Technology in Sydney. He says he’s thinking about a citizenship ceremony.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Australian Financial Review, Wozniak praised current Apple chief executive Tim Cook for breaking free from Steve Jobs’s “dogma” by allowing a big-screen iPhone to be made.

Wozniak says his decision to make Australia home came after he received an email from old friend, Sydney-based barrister Nicholas Baltinos, alerting him to the fact it could be a possibility.

With a son married to an Aussie and resident in Sydney, and a fondness for the local culture, Wozniak says he plunged into the lengthy series of visa applications, medicals and FBI checks before finally being accepted.

Kalifornia taxes must have been taking too much of a bite of his Apple portfolio.

Woz has remained relatively PC, but in confidence, I'd bet he would trash Obolo in a minute.

SHTF strategy?

They could still wind up being a suburb of Beijing, right?

Yes, so much so that Australians even joke about it! I’ve read that they check their shoes before putting them on. Seriously!

Honestly, the only man out of the group who had any real computer talent. Another loss for us.

He could see the writing on the walls. Just like a Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin has moved to Singapore, allowing him to avoid paying capitol gains on his aproximately $3 Billion stake in Facebook. Wozniak always seemed less driven or manic about Apple the business. He has moved most his family to Austrailia.
I agree with him that Google Glass has so far been an ‘admirable failure’; a good product for which there is little use, especially at such a high price.

We have to do that here in Florida. Snakes, scorpions, black widow and brown recluse spiders...

You have to have an FBI check to become a resident of another country?

OK

He wasn’t doing anything for Apple and wherever he ends up (either here or in another country) ... it’s more in the status of a celebrity, rather than doing anything related to computer programming and related stuff.

Yes, but they have a couple tens of thousands of miles of beachfront property where human beings don't really even live that have endless coastline that makes America's finest beaches look like a garbage dump.

... Of course, they're filled with 18-foot long saltwater crocodiles and flying snakes and assassin birds and giant mind-controlling trapdoor spiders just like you said, but if you're a multi-zillionaire who wants to live like all of Australia belongs to you, you can easily do it.

It’s a criminal background check. Other countries don’t want USA criminals moving into their country ... and ... it’s only the FBI who would give a comprehensive check (across the entire country).

It’s something that is entirely understandable.
