Senseless murders of NYPD officers stain a struggle for social justice: opinion
The Birmingham News ^ | December 21, 2014 | Edward T. Bowser

My heart breaks for New York City tonight.

NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu had their lives stolen from them. Ismaaiyl Brinsley allegedly approached their marked police car and opened fire before later turning the gun on himself.

His Instagram account told the story: "I'm putting wings on pigs today. They take 1 of ours, let's take 2 of theirs" - vengeance for the death of New York's Eric Garner, who died after an officer's use of an illegal chokehold.

According to authorities, Brinsley shot and wounded his girlfriend earlier in the day. Clearly, Brinsley was a disturbed man. But sadly, the narrative won't be of an erratic, lone gunman, singling out New York's finest. It will be one of violent, evil retaliation, furthering the divide of a distrustful community and the officers sworn to protect it.

Brinsley's perverted brand of justice cannot be justified. Confronting injustice with more injustice just breeds more sorrow, more pain and more hate. My heart breaks for New Yorkers who now live in fear of further retaliation.

My heart breaks for the protesters, whose diligence was nearly unraveled by Brinsley's heinous actions. Peaceful protests, from New York last weekend to those in Birmingham just Friday, aimed to bring awareness to injustices that have plagued minority communities for generations. Those demonstrations have now been tainted, albeit unfairly, by the actions of a disturbed individual....

Nice if they can rest everybody next week with a win today. They most likely are locked into the #3 seed no matter what.

There won't be any retaliation from the police. Just the opposite. New Yorkers are about to get a taste of what it's like to have the police not do much of anything at all.

I have not seen this yet, but I don’t think the Murderer picked these two victims for any reason other than convenience. So how did he manage to murder two people of color that are cops, and why isn’t the media mentioning that aspect?

This person made a hit of opportunity, they could only tell they were not dark skinned black cops as they come up to the car, not that they would not have shot at black cops. Could have been more about racism that hating cops, but I am not in their head.

1 Yeah, that's the problem. It might tarnish the "peaceful protestors" who are "completely justified" in their actions.

Two days ago in the metro-BHM area, there were 2 of these protests at the 2 largest shopping malls. They were peaceful, but generally small in participation, e.g., >100. The shopping malls are located in the whitest/most affluent areas of Jefferson County/metro-BHM. One was along a major highway and there were some incidents of blocking car traffic. No 1 was arrested. The police and press both outnumbered the protesters. The 2nd was staged inside a closed mall in its food court. Same story.

Both events were organized on FaceBook. The 1 at the indoor mall had more white participants - Lenins' "useful idiots". Plenty of shoppers watched the event down in the food court from the 2nd floor mall walkways above.

The local TV stations/news rags, e.g., , AL.com, all frame this stuff against the civil rights events of 1963. It is nauseating. I sometimes get the feeling that even in this overwhelming majority white area, that the whites under 50 years of age have been beaten into submission with diversity training.

It’s the 99% of protesters who are violent that are giving the 1% peaceful protesters a bad name.

Yes, my heart also breaks for the peaceful protesters.

You know the ones, the ones who chanted "What do want?" "DEAD COPS" "When do we want them?" "NOW".

Yes, they are so victimized. Probably by Ted Cruz.

My heart breaks for the protesters,

The ghetto mobs and mobsters who have been demonstrating against the police are about to get a taste of life without them.

These were not SENSELESS MURDERS. These were planned murders of random policemen by an Islamic terrorist. This randomness in terrorism is what incites fear.
