Gay rights activist Dan Savage has hit out at the parents of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn, the trans teenager who tragically took her own life last Sunday (December 28).

When children who reported transgender feelings were tracked without medical or surgical treatment at both Vanderbilt University and London's Portman Clinic, 70%-80% of them spontaneously lost those feelings. Some 25% did have persisting feelings; what differentiates those individuals remains to be discerned.
We at Johns Hopkins University—which in the 1960s was the first American medical center to venture into "sex-reassignment surgery"—launched a study in the 1970s comparing the outcomes of transgendered people who had the surgery with the outcomes of those who did not. Most of the surgically treated patients described themselves as "satisfied" by the results, but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn't have the surgery. And so at Hopkins we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a "satisfied" but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs.
It now appears that our long-ago decision was a wise one. A 2011 study at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden produced the most illuminating results yet regarding the transgendered, evidence that should give advocates pause. The long-term study—up to 30 years—followed 324 people who had sex-reassignment surgery. The study revealed that beginning about 10 years after having the surgery, the transgendered began to experience increasing mental difficulties. Most shockingly, their suicide mortality rose almost 20-fold above the comparable nontransgender population. This disturbing result has as yet no explanation but probably reflects the growing sense of isolation reported by the aging transgendered after surgery. The high suicide rate certainly challenges the surgery prescription.
The parents said they took away his social media because he was looking at in appropriate content. The cattiness of the article suggests that parents don't have a right to do this. BS. My parents forbade me to watch certain movies and TV when I was a teen. I am also well aware that I would whine about it. But guess who won? Not me. He was probably looking at porn and there are other kids in the house.
Yet, here they are talking about some selfish freak who cared only about his
sexual desires in a perverted manor. Shame on those who promote this sickness.
My question in reading the title and what little of the article on that pop-up infested website I could read in the initial download is “Prosecuted for what?”
If this whatever suggests something like abuse because the parents tried to instill their morals on their child, then I submit the homosexual parents of an adopted son or daughter should be prosecuted for the same thing.

Dan Savage, people like you who want to celebrate this and make celebrity the people who are like this and THAT is the problem.
Kids more and more are losing their rights as the gender they are born to accommodate people who are confused.
Celebrating the stories of these kids, making them homecoming kings and queens for no other reason than they rebel against their natural sex or for their sexual desires for same sex.
Do black kids become homecoming king or queen just because they are black? No and they shouldn’t, the same as white kids shouldn’t become king or queen based on color.
Many homosexuals are never truly happy and continue to think people are against them even when excepted by those around them because it’s inside them where the battle is. They are battling nature and feel it is wrong even if the world says it is OK.
I am sure some people never outgrow this feeling but I can’t imagine if my parents had started giving me drugs and such and declared to the world that I was transgendered and transitioning because I loved everything boy.
Boys had cooler toys, they didn’t wear dumb dresses or wear makeup, they liked bugs and didn’t gossip about silly things. Boys were wonderful! Girls, bah! It wasn’t that I was a boy, it was that I loved boys THAT much...as I would find out later. I had to live the life to know the ending.
As a young adult I thought the scariest most horrid thing was growing old, now I am learning this story and I actually like it. There is much more freedom with age!
I can’t imagine having to grow-up today in the grown-up insanity of this free-for all crud. I am also glad I raised my child before it became this crazy.

Sort of like getting pimples as a teenager. Most outgrow them although some continue to get zits into adulthood.
Since when isn’t suicide something you do to yourself, and a crime to boot? Could he/she have sued his/her parents if he/she has robbed a bank instead?
I don’t even understand what homosexuals get out of this, considering the “transgender” thing has nothing to do with homosexuality besides the fact that they’re both perversions. Most “transgenders,” like most people, are straight. Why they’re lumped in with gays, lesbians, and others, aside from the fact that it helps politically, is beyond me. Or perhaps I should say why we let them pretend they’re together is beyond me. Then again, lesbians don’t have the same interests as gay men, nor do bisexuals with either. Nor do blacks and Hispanics, as becomes more apparent everyday, so I guess LGTBEIEIOers aren’t unusual.
If it’s numbers they’re after, why not add as many degenerates as possible? Let’s add nose-pickers and make it LGTBNP.
I live in Seattle and know a lot of leftist parents here. There is a full-blown transgenderism fad going on where parents want to show how open-minded they are by damaging their children. At the annual Christmas party we attend, one couple brought their young son dressed as a girl.

Believe me I know full well about it. I like a particular TV show that unfortunately attracts a large crowd of these freaks and their enablers.
That's an interesting question. I don't know. But, there are people today who have elective cosmetic surgery again and again and again because they're never quite satisfied with the way they look. IMHO, "reassignment" is very much like other elective cosmetic surgeries. They're all about outward appearances, and some people will never be happy.
It's sad. But, because they refused to play along and instead looked for help for their son in other ways, this teen's parents were good parents, even though he himself didn't understand that.
Dan Thavage needs to mind his own business.
I agree. Those who “transition” seem more trapped than the usual by their idea of who men and women are and what men and women do, rather than that men and women are free to have their own interests regardless of their sex. Thus, they want to become their clownish idea of what the opposite sex is or does by changing their own sex.
