A sitting speaker has never been removed but experts agree that it is possible...

I had to do some digging, but I believe this is the answer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson%27s_Manual#U.S._House_of_Representatives

The House of Representatives formally incorporated Jefferson's Manual into its rules in 1837, stipulating that the manual "should govern the House in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with the standing rules and order of the House and the joint rules of the Senate and the House of Representatives."

This URL contains (among other stuff) "Jefferson’s Manual of Parliamentary Practice":

Constitution, Jefferson's Manual, and the Rules of the House of Representatives, 111th Congress

See page 3 of Section IX: Speaker:

§ 315. Removal of the Speaker: A Speaker may be removed at the will of the House, and a Speaker pro tempore appointed, 2 Grey, 186; 5 Grey, 134.

I believe that is the actual notes made by Jefferson, and this additional text is explanation that was added later:

A resolution declaring the Office of Speaker vacant presents a question of constitutional privilege (VI, 35), though the House has never removed a Speaker. It has on several occasions removed or suspended other officers, such as Clerk and Doorkeeper (I, 287–290, 292; II, 1417). A resolution for the removal of an officer is presented as a matter of privilege (I, 284– 286; VI, 35). The Speaker may remove the Clerk, Sergeant-at-Arms, and Chief Administrative Officer under clause 1 of rule II.

My interpretation is that the Speaker can be removed by a majority of all Representatives. So, that would mean it would require 218 Republicans to vote against their sitting Speaker.

If the rules allowed a point of order to force the democrats to vote first,

Just say "in the interests of Bi-partisanship" and working with "our friends across the aisle" we will allow the dims to vote first....then make it so.

I'm thinking Yoho might have been a false flag put up job by Boehner to try to take down any real opposition.

Gohmert is the real deal.

Happy New Year. It seems to be starting out right, with this news.
********
It certainly is the best news I have heard in a long, long time!
Gohmert would be a great speaker, but whatever happens he has opened the door (along with others like Yoho) for others to vote against Boehner.

Hey thanks justlurking - a majority of the house just like election to speaker....

It's interesting to think about the ramifications of having the R speaker elected via a deal with the Dems.

How would this affect the rest of the R members?

Heck we may be dreaming... we may not get to any of this but it's nice to ponder!

True. Anyone is better than Boehner.
However, few are better than Gohmer. He’s a rock.

Where I’m spending my time this morning is thinking about what will happen after boehner is elected via a deal with pelosi.

Finally! Someone hit on it!

The Dems are in their weakest minority in a generation, but Pelosi, much as I despise her, is a hard-core politician. You've got to admire her absolute willingness to fight every inch. She's got balls, something sadly remaining among many Republicans.

She knows she'll not be Speaker, but I guarantee you she's working like a demon to exploit this situation.

She might, in fact, instruct enough Democrats to abstain... but Lord only knows what she'll get for it.

We really need someone so ruthless on our side.

Says a lot about the numb nut we send to congress that it is a tough job to find 29 willing to stand up against a lying scum bag sellout like Boner.

“Yhe democrats should be made to VOTE FIRST.

Then if any democrats vote for Boehner, Conservatives that are sitting on the fence will know the game is up and should step up to vote for Gohmert, Yoho or Blackburn (of she’s willing).”

Great idea! Are you a chess player?

I’ve been hammering my congressman via his email link. If anyone else cares to do so, here’s what the last one I sent — maybe you can use it to give you an idea of what to write your congressman:

Dear Congressman,

Please DO NOT retain John Boehner as Speaker of the house.

If John Boehner is retained as speaker, then all of the seats we fought for and gained in the last election will have been for nothing. The nation needs a speaker who IS NOT a chronic capitulator! We need a speaker who will fight *AT LEAST* as hard as the democrats fight.

John Boehner is the perfect poster child for a spineless, “Democrat-Lite” Republican. He stands for immigration amnesty. He stands for Big Government spending. He stands for weak, tepid opposition to the liberal agenda before ultimately caving into their demands.

CONGRESSMAN LOUIE GOHMERT HAS THROWN HIS HAT INTO THE RING TO BE SPEAKER. HERE IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY to prove that you value the future of our nation more than you value any committee assignments John Boehner’s retention may reward you with personally.

PLEASE SUPPORT CONGRESSMAN LOUIE GOHMERT’S CANDIDACY FOR SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE!!

We are counting on YOU Congressman, to act in the best interest of the nation and NOT as just another congressional puppet on this matter in the pocket of Priebus, Rove and the rest of the elitist GOP anti-conservatives.

Where do you stand?

“It’s our party, not his or anybody else on the Hill. We elect them, we pay them and pay for them, they will dance to our tune or be out”

Nice thoughts, and I do echo them, but that isn’t how things work out in the REAL WORLD.

In the REAL WORLD, it now costs as much as Ten Million Dollars, or more, to run for some House seats, every two years, for a job that pays $175K.

The Party Leadership controls the election money, and can control the reps by threatening to withhold it. We have seen both Boehner and McConnell use this against “Tea Party” Conservatives with great effect.

Only a Rep in very safe district, with secure, independent financing, will be willing to take the risk of going up against “The Machine”.

Agree completely. Yoho just voted for the Obama-Boehner amnesty quid pro quo cromnibus bill. He’ll be a loud, buffoonish conservative on non substantive votes but plays for Team Boehner when needed. Total fake conservative, IMHO.
