DETROIT — General Motors plans to start selling an affordable electric car in 2017 that will be able to go 200 miles on a single charge.

A person briefed on the matter told The Associated Press that GM plans to start selling a $30,000 battery powered family car called the Chevrolet Bolt sometime in 2017.

A concept version of the car will be unveiled Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the official announcement hasn't been made.

Amen to that...Taxpayers subsidizing EVs at $7500 a pop is criminal in my view.

If the EV lovers think they’re so great that’s their right but they should be willing to foot the bill for them unassisted by tax dollars.

My ‘98 jeep was bought about 20K miles back with a blown engine (holed piston, associated valve damage)and rebuilt for a total of about 4K.
I sometimes get 18 mpg. I put some oil in it the other day.
Ha.

I’m glad I’m not the only one...

This means, probably -STARTING at $30,000.
Which to me means $40k - for a CAR.

Sorry guys... Just can’t afford that.

$30k is affordable? To who? Presidents who take $5 million vacations every other week?

Yep, and I’d bet that starting price will be above $30K because they’re saying around. They want the price a little lower than the supposed Tesla coming out for around $35K.

I’ll believe both when I see them.

I think my next car will be an Elio (if they ever get it into production).

I kind of like compressed nitrogen hybrids, although we haven’t seen them in small production vehicles.

We didn’t even get to the enviro benefit. No, the cars emit directly zero greenhouse gas. Of course the plug in the wall provides electricity provided by pollution-free genies. Or not.

volt amortization is extended to 50 years

And the Bolt may only cost $30K, but what is its residual sale value? Most buyers sell or trade in their car before the end of its life to buy a new car. I suspect that a used electric car isn't worth much once its main battery array has run out its useful life. And I doubt the lifetime of a battery array today is anything like the lifetime of a modern auto engine.

I’m cheap. I bought my Honda Civic new in 2001 and it is still running great. Since I only commute 3.5 miles to work, I have no plans on selling it.

If that 200 miles is like the mileage claimed for new cars, likely it dies around 150-180 miles unless all downhill.

Q. How do you turn a 16 hour road trip into a 5 day road trip?

A. Get screwed by a Bolt.

About 100 miles is on The Natchez Trace Parkway. Most is about the crookedest road I have been on but mostly level road. It is not a road to run out of steam on. Most of it that I am on is in the backwoods of nowhere. Many years ago, my daughter and I along with her then very young kids were coming back home. We forgot to get gas before leaving my hometown. I mean it was way past the E and no gas stations anywhere that we knew of. We drove about 90 miles on fumes and prayers. We made it to our exit and got to a station just off the Trace. Never happened again and I make sure I fill up before leaving my hometown. I do not like for it to get below 1/4 tank. One lesson learned.

Nothing ‘moderate’ about the upkeep or maintaining it.
