A middle school principal in eastern Alabama wants to stockpile cans of food such as corn and peas in classrooms so that students could hurl them as weapons in a last-resort confrontation with a school intruder.
In a letter Friday, W.F. Burns Middle School Principal Priscella Holley asked parents to have each student bring an 8-ounce canned item.
"We realize at first this may seem odd; however, it is a practice that would catch an intruder off guard," she wrote in the letter, published by TV station WHNT in Huntsville.
"The canned food item could stun the intruder or even knock him out until the police arrive," Holley wrote. "The canned food item will give the students a sense of empowerment to protect themselves and will make them feel secure in case an intruder enters their classroom."
The school is in Valley, Alabama, part of the Chambers County school system.
The letter was sent after school employees received training from Auburn University's Department of Public Safety, Chambers County Schools Superintendent Kelli Hodge told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday.

Uh huh. Sorry, but this is one of the stupidest ideas I’ve ever heard.
The idea, bub, is to keep the attacker away from the kids. Not to try to turn kids into armed guards.

I've had this "training", too. It's a shame we silly civilians/peasants aren't competent enough to be trained to shoot back as a first resort.

On average, no. While there are certainly some females capable of throwing a can of green beans harder or farther than some males, the "average male" will be able to hurl a can of beets (or any other, similar object) harder and farther than the "average female". At the highest levels, the most hard-throwing male will almost certainly be able to hurl canned corn harder and farther than the most hard-throwing female.
But you already knew that.
How dare we use food as a weapon when there are hungry children in our midst.
