Pope Francis suggested there are limits to freedom of expression, saying in response to the Charlie Hebdo terror attack that "one cannot make fun of faith" and that anyone who throws insults can expect a "punch."

The pontiff said that both freedom of faith and freedom of speech were fundamental human rights and that "every religion has its dignity."

"One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people's faith, one cannot make fun of faith," he said. "There is a limit. Every religion has its dignity ... in freedom of expression there are limits."

The pope was speaking to reporters on a plane as he flew from Sri Lanka to the Philippines on his tour of Asia.

Speech intended to provoke violence, “Fighting Words”, is not protected speech.

Every religion has dignity; I cannot mock a religion that respects human life and the human person.

[Buzzer]... wrong answer.

According to the Bible, there is exactly 1 true religion, Christianity as set forth in the Holy Scriptures.

Any and all other religions are false religions and are highly offensive to God.

Scripture proof is left as an excercise for the reader.

Not all speech is protected. Libel and slander, defamation are not protected. Otherwise, I agree with what you’re saying. You might get punched for insulting someone, but it’s against the law to punch anyone. Even so, mass murder is way off the charts for a reaction to an insult. That’s Islam.

Islam is not a real religion and should not have 1st amendment protection. The left is trying to make muslims into another one of their under privileged victims groups. That’s like kissing a poisonous snake on the lips. Islam should be suppressed before they kill all us.

“I don’t think Islam is a real religion anymore...” Huh? You actually thought that at one time?

It’s amazing the Vatican cardinal cabal hasn’t yet done a little dunking of Francis in the Tiber to help get his act together.

Jesus advocated self defense somewhat, but he did not advocate giving someone a punch if one makes fun of our faith. He pretty much warned us that it was going to happen, sometimes a majority of the time, and that we should not take offense, because the offense is directed toward Him.

This is Obama’s Pope. The Pope is a communist through and through.

I thought the Pope was supposed to defend Catholicism not pander to other religions. This Pope has read Karl Marx much more than he has read the Bible.

I don’t think laws that protect people from abuse are “straw men”.

” I guess I don’t understand your anger at him.”

Appeasement doesn’t work. And I don’t think he is speaking as a pastor, any more than he will be when he butts his nose into the global warming debate. He’s like a person who says we need to understand why people have sex outside of marriage...too full of ‘understanding’ to preach the Gospel, which starts with “Repent”!

[Buzzer]... wrong answer.

And far from the only one.

After next week's Muslim mass murder, the jihadis can claim that the Pope's words showed that he did not disapprove of such violence in response to an insult to Islam.

The assailant decides which insults warrant assault. Be careful of sensitive assailants. One may punch you for cursing his mother. Another may punch you for cursing his dog. And another may punch you for drawing a cartoon of his dog.

After Catholic grade school, Catholic high school and Catholic college, I stopped being Catholic today when I heard our leader condones violence and limiting free speech. The church gets no more money from me.
