At SHOT Show, you get a mutant rifle that’s smart and as simple to use as a modern sporting rifle.
CMMG introduced its newest AR-15-style rifles: the Mk47 Mutant T, Mutant AKM, and Mutant AKM2. The company touts the new Mutant arrivals as a smart blend of the AK’s ammunition and magazines with the accuracy and compatibility of components of the AR.
The Mutant was drawing a lot of crowds interested in the accuracy of an AR combined with the take down power of the 7.62x39 mm cartridge.
The MK-47 gas-operated semi-auto rifle is removable box magazine fed. It features a 16.1-inch free-floated barrel fitted with an AR carbine length direct-impingement gas system operating the AR-style bolt assembly. It has a slim receiver enhancing its sleek looks.
The two-position safety lever works like an AR safety and is positioned on the left side just above the grip.
Many of the Mk47's components are interchangeable with military-spec AR-15 and CMMG Mk3 components, including the threaded muzzle, gas tube and block, grip and shoulder stock.
The Mutant T base model is chambered for the 7.62×39 cartridge and there’s a special receiver for AK-47 magazines. The weight is 7.2 pounds and the overall length is 33.5 inches with the stock collapsed.

The standard AR gun is a DI gas system. Some shooters don’t like corrosive milsurplus ammo through those type of systems because it blows the dirty leftovers all over the internals.
Almost all my guns are AKs so I don’t care what kind of ammo I shoot.
Because their were a lot of AR manufacturers at the show These guys just are trying to get apiece of the pie.
I gave them a quick look over and moved on.

What you say is true, but retreading the article this is also a direct gas impingement action.
If you have lots and lots of money you're just dancing on both feet to throw away on lottery tickets, here's your rifle.
The Israelis and the Finns went the other way: they got the solid as a stove bolt/impervious to all debris, dust, rain, rocks AK action and mated it to our 5.56mm NATO. The Israelis even stole the FN CAL folding stock and made the Galil.
Now if only they had figured out a better sighting system and a less amusing/goofy safety, and maybe gravitated towards something in the 6.5mm range,just think how great that would be..

Maybe the special receiver it mentions protects the internals. I don’t know. I like piston guns. And I definitely won’t pay $1700 to shoot 7.62x39, 5.56mm, or 5.45x39mm.
My 300 AAC Blackout chambered AR does everything the 7.62X39 does, and more. More accuracy, more choice of bullets, no need for any changes in a standard .223/5.56 NATO chambered AR other than a barrel, and in some cases, a shorter gas tube. I reload my own ammo with cases converted from .223/5.56 range brass so my shooting costs are kept low.

The main reason some folks will like this is because it uses AK mags. The big problem with previous attempts at a 762x39 AR is mostly due to magazine issues related to the shape of the tapered cartridge. Because of the taper, mags have to be curved and with the common AR lower, the mag can’t be curved enough and still be able to be inserted into common AR mag wells.
On top of this, so much material has to be milled from a standard 556 bolt head to accommodate the x39 casehead that it causes premature bolt failure. That’s why cmmg went with the bolt that is used in 762x51 AR rifles.
