COLUMBIA, S.C. – A professor who taught anatomy and physiology and was highly regarded by both his students and fellow faculty members was shot and killed by his ex-wife in an apparent murder-suicide at the University of South Carolina, a coroner said Friday.

Sunghee Kwon shot Raja Fayad several times in the upper body Thursday afternoon in a fourth-floor office at the university's Public Health building, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release.

Kwan then committed suicide with a gunshot to her stomach, the coroner said. A 9 mm pistol with an empty magazine was found near the bodies, State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said.

No one witnessed the shooting, which happened in a small laboratory and adjacent office, Berry said Friday.

Kwon, 46, and Fayad, 45, were divorced a few years ago, but continued to live together until they split up for good a few months ago, Watts said. Kwon was still living in the couple's home on Lake Murray in Lexington County, while Fayad had moved to a long-term hotel with a family member, according to the coroner.

Authorities have searched several different locations but found no notes or other writing to help them find a reason for the shooting, Berry said.

Some reports indicate that he’d recently turned off internet and telephone service to the family house (he wasn’t going to pay for it anymore).

I wonder if the wife and her ex-husband were anti-gun?

Kwan then committed suicide with a gunshot to her stomach,

Holy crap. That is NOT the way to commit suicide.

He was originally from Lebanon, according to other sources, and attended medical school in Syria. Lebanon has several major religious groups, including Christian and Druze, as well as Moslems. I’m guessing the ex-wife was Korean.

It appears he had moved on from the marriage, while she hadn’t. Risky life choices, there.

It is if you're the ex-wife of a man that taught anatomy and physiology and you didn't want an ugly looking corpse.

When I saw the two names, I went looking for the ex-wife and found almost nothing truly identifying her, indicating she was not necesarilly a twitter/facebook type person

The photos I DID find that MAY be her are glamorous type shots which would align with my theory regarding the belly shot.

I DO think it just a little odd her photo is not being shown

A Lebonese born professional married to a Korean is a bit unusual

Koreans are, for the most part, very faithful citizens and Middle Easterners ... not so much these days

Yes, that IS the latest in tin foil fashions ... do you like it ?

She must have been seriously disturbed to do this to him, and to herself. Suicide by gut shooting is a hard way to go.

Isn’t the University of South Carolina campus a gun free zone?

So far on the thread, there is one vote for Taiwanese, one for Malaysian, and two for Korean. I conclude that none of us really knows. It could be anything!

A shot to the vena cava and you’re a goner. Surgeons would have a difficult time saving you even if you were shot on the operating room table. Or so they say. An anatomist would know that. Maybe he told her ar some point in their marriage. Or she had studied anatomy herself. But you’re right, it’s not the best way to go. Bleeding to death isn’t fun.

Korean names are helpful because there are so few of them! Kwan sounds Chinese, too.

And who is the "family member"--and why does a divorced couple live together? Did they get married for Green Cards?

South Carolina has *lots* of Muslim MDs.

After looking into this, there is surprisingly little coverage on what should be a rather sensational event in a small community--MUSC may be over a few campuses, but is still only one medical school.

I'm jumping to the conclusion that this involves Muslims.

Multiculturalism at work. All cultures are the same, and responses to conflict are the same. Perhaps not in practice, so it may be dangerous to get hitched to a member of a culture that may surprise in unpleasant ways. After the murder, could the ex-wife be motivated by traditional Japanese seppuku? In any event, it is very sad.

Lots of good questions. The answers may emerge if the local media (and the UK Daily Mail) don’t lose interest first.

I saw a report this morning that the doc was doing great work on colon cancer. His students apparently thought the world of him and his work.

As a side note, don't expect any great detective work to come out of Columbia, SC. Not the greatest work being done there. My son attended school at USC and I am glad he made it out of the city alive and with a diploma....crime is under reported but where isn't it? The University is a good one, especially the business school..excellent even. But I know of 2 specific cases that the investigations were pathetic at best, if I know of 2 then there must be more! I must say though, the police as a whole do the best they can with what they are given or allowed to do.

**MUSC may be over a few campuses**

Picking a nit here,

MUSC is in Charleston.
USC Medical School is in Columbia, about -6-7 miles away from the main campus, on the eastern side of the city.
The Arnold School of Public Health is located on the western side of the main Campus of The USC, not part of the USC Medical School.

I work at USC and was locked down for a bit over an hour, broke it here: Shots fired at the University of South Carolina (Situation Over, update at #32).
