After Sandy, one of the nightly newscasts featured a ‘ride along’ with code enforcement on Long Island....cracking down on illegal tree trimmers.

The cops were responding to a complaint.

They’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

someone likely called the Police on the kids

A few summers ago, some kids set up a lemonade stand, outside the local park. Some busybody called, because their table “encroached” upon the sidewalk.

Sheriff’s Deputy rolled up, explained the situation, and helped the kids move the table onto the grass. His final act was to buy a cup of lemonade, from the kids ;)

Meanwhile, criminals are robbing, rapists are raping, murderers are murdering. But the cops are talking to kids who shovel snow.

they were tipped off by a cantankerous resident.

Like a town selectman who had the DPW workers clear his snow.

This is an excellent use of Police time.

Because solving crimes like these make the world a safer place.

Solving crime is not on the agenda of the police, in my experience.

Wow.

I hope the politicians who are in charge of this law use it for re-election:

“Harry Smith. Tough on crime. Cracking down on teenage snow shovellers.”

Pretty lucky, we are. Lowest crime rate, for a city our size (50,000) in California, last year. The cops come down like a ton of bricks, when genuine bad guys need it, but pretty much everyone I know, myself included, has gotten at least one free pass, for minor issues.

The problem is that this was illegal at all. We shouldn’t have stupid laws and then somehow assume that cops won’t enforce them.

People can sneak into this country, in the process committing all kinds of fraud. Take jobs OFF THE BOOKS, file bogus tax returns, and be IGNORED by “law enforcement” when “law enforcement” specifically come across them yet our own kids can’t make a buck shoveling snow!
