Trouble Mounts for Brian Williams: NBC Reportedly Looking into His Expense Accounts

NBC has expanded its probe into embattled news anchor Brian Williams to examine his expense accounts, New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman reports.

Williams, whom NBC suspended for six months without pay on Tuesday, has come under fire since admitting last week that he misled the public by claiming to have come under enemy fire aboard an Army Chinook during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The “NBC Nightly News” anchor also faces scrutiny over claims he’s made about his experiences during Hurricane Katrina and the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War.

I think Williams was probably toast just as soon as Katrina came up, because that is far more potentially embarrassing to the media at large (as well as being the foundation of his career). They've managed to twist the undeniable chemical weapons finds in Iraq into a Bush criticism but this one isn't really subject to that sort of spin. Ironic, perhaps, but understandable, because at this point not a lot of people care a great deal about Bush's reputation, but they do care about the reputation of the media, and the level of derision delightfully directed at Williams on this one makes that one a pain point where otherwise it might not have been.

Then, too, there might well be genuine expense account issues. How sad is it when everyone's first reaction is that they're lying and using that as an excuse? How sad is it that we're probably right?

Heaven's no. I doubt NBC wants to see this anywhere near a court house. Too many skeletons in too many closets that Williams knows all about. They'll offer him a severance package with undisclosed terms and Brian Williams will never set foot in 30 Rockefeller Plaza again.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Fox hire him though.

Brian Williams’s lies weren’t small... the lies showed total contempt for the American people, for NBC, and for his profession.

A man who has that kind of disdain for the rights of others won’t stop at simple lies. There’s more. And more within NBC...

Wouldn’t surprise me if companies with highly paid rockstar employees deliberately allow them to misuse their expense accounts simply to ensure an easy termination if needed.
