Bill O'Reilly has His Own Brian Williams Problem
Mother Jones ^ | 2/19/2015 | David Corn and Daniel Schulman

Posted on 02/20/2015 3:09:59 PM PST by Laissez-faire capitalist

After NBC News suspended anchor Brian Williams for erroneously claiming that he was nearly shot down in a helicopter while covering the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly went on a tear. On his television show, the top-rated cable news anchor declared that the American press isn't "half as responsible as the men who forged the nation." He bemoaned the supposed culture of deception within the liberal media, and he proclaimed that the Williams controversy should prompt questioning of other "distortions" by left-leaning outlets. Yet for years, O'Reilly has recounted dramatic stories about his own war reporting that don't withstand scrutiny - even claiming he acted heroically in a war zone that he apparently never set foot in. ...

Bill O’Reilly has lied repeatedly about many aspects of the “nativity story.”

He has NEVER dealt with any single concrete fact. Such as: The “birth certificate” has the typefaces of six different typewriters on it. Just deal with that ONE FACT on your show some night, BOR.

O'Reilly refuted Corn's allegations tonight on his show with some documents from 30 years ago and Bernie Goldberg's backing him up. This is about Corn trying to make himself and Mother Jones relevant. They are at the bottom of the leftist heap of yellow journalism. O'Reilly is at the top of the heap of the cable news industry. What else would you expect?

This is what losers do to try and make people notice them. I don't have any dog in the O'Reilly allegations hunt, but from what I know of David Corn, I wouldn't believe that stuttering, liberal idiot for one moment.

Hmm this is kind of like the Iran Iraq war: Whom to root for? I guess I’ll just watch and enjoy Baxter getting roasted.

Like I said, MJ is a liberal site.

perhaps Corn and Schulman are commentators like O’Reilly, as Corn is on Hardball quite often.

O’Reilly has responded and I imagine that Corn and Schulman will counter-respond Monday.

As I basically said at the beginning, I have no idea how this will turn out, and, again, as I said above “who knows how this will turn out” -— as this goes back and forth.

As I said above, “who knows what will come from this.”

O’Reilly has responded and I imagine that Corn will counter-respond on Monday. This will undoubtedly go back and forth -— and so, again, “who knows what will come from this” -— as this goes round and round?

But, if I am not mistaken, didn’t the NE uncover that stuff on John Edwards?

As I said before this post on this thread, O’Reilly has responded, but as I said at the beginning of this thread “Who knows how this will turn out.”

David Corn will undoubtedly counter-respond on Monday (if he hasn’t already) and this will probably go back and forth.

I imagine that this is not over, as each may or may not take jabs and counter-jabs at each other.

O’Reilly pretty much shot all this down on last night’s program.

I think he’s essentially full of hot air, but he had the documentation from his CBS years to verify all that he had claimed from that period.

David Corn? Please.

From MMFA (2/20/2015):

More Embellishments From Bill O’Reilly

“Bill O’Reilly claims he never said he was in the Falkland Islands while reporting on the Falklands War from Buenos Aires, but over the years O’Reilly has created the impression he was in a combat zone.”

I agree, I saw it too. He’s still a bloviator, but he’s in the clear on the Falklands. And Corn just looks smaller.

It was Inside Edition, and it was the late 80s, early 90s. Not 70s/80s. He was with CBS in the early 80s.

Yes, I guess you're right. Interesting how the decades back then run together in my memory. Ah well.

I don't really feel that strongly about O'Reilly. I don't think he's a conservative, at least not in an ideological way. I don't think he's ideological at all.

I think he's a broadcast professional who has a finely-honed set of survival skills, and that's what drives how he sees the world. His world is all about the process of getting to the top of the broadcasting slippery pole, and staying there. He's kind of full of himself, but not to the toxic extent that Dan Rather, or Keith Olbermann, or Brian Williams is (or was). He doesn't strike me as a "crazy," like Juan Williams, who can and will spout obvious nonsense if it falls to him to do so as he works to promote The Narrative.

Conservatives like us tend to look at anyone who takes up our cause as "one of us." Then, at some point, that person takes a position that deviates from what we see as "pure" Conservatism, and we immediately turn on them. I saw this happen with Ann Coulter, with Megyn Kelly, and with Fox News in general. Tony Snow was an exception, but unfortunately he was taken from us. How good it would be to have the benefit of his voice today.
