Nemtsov was opposed to Putin and other gangsters ruling Russia. He was the leading political opponent to Putin and the Russian invasion and war in Ukraine.
It is reported he was about to expose more on Russia’s invasion and war in Ukraine, likely things Putin and his fellow gangsters did want exposed.
It was also reported that he was going to name names connected to corruption surrounding the Sochi Olympics. He ran for mayor of Sochi, and lost, a few years ago.
“Leading opponent” is a bit wrong, as well.
Nemtsov was pretty much marginalized a decade ago, and has been ever since. Navalny seems to be the one with that title, but Nemtsov is/was much more popular with the Western Media.
