German tank battalion to be activated amid Russia crisis

Germany plans to activate a tank battalion that exists only on paper as it seeks to increase the country's military capability. The defense minister spoke of a "changed security situation" amid the conflict in Ukraine.

In a magazine interview published on Friday, German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said the tank battalion, based in Bergen in the state of Lower Saxony, would receive more equipment and personnel as part of efforts to redress what she called "an investment bottleneck."

She also told the magazine, which is published by the German Bundeswehr, that already existing units would be equipped with more material and that the already close cooperation with the French, Polish and Dutch armies would be stepped up still further.

Now you are saying that the American and NATO naval forces are no match for the Russian navy as well?

Our navy is far superior to Russia's. So was the Kriegsmarine. What naval battles do you envision taking place?

I don’t expect Putin to be so stupid as to put his inadequate military against ours and all the dozens of NATO countries by invading us, that is your gig.

I've never believed Putin has ambitions to invade us. He's going to take Ukraine back and we're going to watch him do it while making disapproving statements.

It’s hard to know what you think, you want to belittle us and our NATO alliance, and build up Putin and Russia.

Like all of the pro-Russian crowd, you just seem angry at anything that interferes with Putin’s military goals or that shows any resistance from our side.

In the meanwhile hopefully we will continue strengthening our defenses against a Russian invasion and supply training and equipment to our friends the Ukrainians.

At no time have I ever said anything about Russia moving into western Europe.

I have pointed out that Russia says they will retain Ukraine, using everything in its arsenal if need be.

Lets stick to what their war colleges teach.

And how about you address only things I actually post, not Ansel12’s rantings about what he fantasizes other people to mean.

So you think that Putin is so strangely obsessed with conquering Ukraine, that he is willing to end Russia over it, by destroying Russia in a nuclear war?

Did you not say ‘’the West pursing Ukraine’’? I asked in the nature of clarification, cool your jets “Edd’’. I agree that Putin will do want he feels he needs to about Ukraine. I've stated that several times. I've also said if he gets away with this, from a historical perspective he might,(notice the word) might get ideas about Finland, which after all had been part of Russia until 1918. To bottom line it I think the ex-KGB thug is capable of just about anything. I think he's nuts, screwy in the head with maybe a massive Napoleonic complex. And I'll address whom I please, ok? I'm, not telling you who you can address.

I don't get it

I am a little confused too. When I read about the Wehrmacht kicking the Red Army's ass in WWII I have a hard time picking sides.

Well, the UN could draft strongly-worded resolutions denouncing this act of naked aggression. That might make Putin quake in his boots. sar./

You are comparing the WW2 U-boat heavy Kriegsmarine, with the unprecedented firepower of the 2015 US Navy? You are forgetting that the US Navy has the second largest air force in the world (next to the USAF). With our massive carrier fleet and tomahawk missles, combat power can be projected hundreds of miles inland.

On the other hand, the pride of the rusting Russian Navy is their Black Sea Fleet, which is useless if NATO decides to bar Russian access through the Bosporus. If Putin were dumb enough to attack the US Navy, he might get one good hit and wreck one fleet, but we have several more and he doesn't. The Black Sea Fleet would sink and any Russian forces along the Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and Pacific would be destroyed. Of course, this isn't even taking into account the use of our nuclear subs. If he attacks NATO, then Putin would truly be a mad man.
