The case against smart bombs and drones in the war on terror.
Every time we are shown a grainy picture of some Toyota or individual building being hit by a smart bomb, Tomahawk missile, or Hellfire from a drone we feel a little pride in our technological superiority and the satisfaction that we have taken the fight to the terrorists and killed one, two, or three of them. In short, we feel like we have accomplished something.
Let me tell you whats going on in the surviving terrorists tents that night. They are nervously celebrating the martyrdom of a few of their fellow terrorists with murmurs of Insha'Allah (it was Gods will) and louder assertions of Allāhu Akbar! (God is Great!) as those with aspirations plot to replace the dead in leadership positions. The common foot soldier knows that it would only be in the case of Insha'Allah that he would be unlucky enough to die in one of these very targeted strikes.
Consider this same strike carried out by a flight of B52s, dropping tons upon tons of dumb bombs, saturating the entire area of operations with blasts and shrapnel. That night, instead of 50 terrorists contemplating the deaths of a few unlucky comrades you would have a few lucky survivors contemplating the deaths of scores of their brothers.
Suddenly, the few in command are not the targets, but everyone on the battlefield. The true believers are few and far between and the willing foot soldiers left are not so willing.
War is ugly, dirty, and vicious. Winning requires you play by those rules.
Brother, you are so right. I have been saying the same thing for years. Wars are not won with scalpels, they are won with broadswords and axes. Lots and lots and lots of dumb bombs iow.
By the end of WWII the “dumb” bombs were actually pretty accurate from what I understand.
Well, when you’re dropping A-bombs, close is actually good enough. Or so I have heard said.
I think we make a mistake with our snipers as well.
A head shot, in the minds of the target’s comrades, instantly and painlessly removes the jihadist from Hell on earth (living in a primitive and brutal muslim land) to a paradise of literal fountains of milk and honey, surrounded by 72 virgins and 18 ‘young boys like pearls’ eager to satisfy his every sexual desire.
Aim for the small head guys!
Now Achmed’s buddies get to see him scream and curse, watch him slowly and painfully bleed out, with the sure and certain knowledge that if, if he makes it to paradise he will have no ability to enjoy the virgins and young boys.
And if Achmed manages to survive, he’s a living example that allah is not merciful. He’s an object of pity and disgust, not someone to be emulated.
Our snipers aren’t trained to torture their targets, just remove them as a threat.
Nagasaki was a secondary target. The people of Kokura had a lucky cloudy day.
Is the goal to kill an individual jihadi, or to win the war by persuading them all that fighting us is a VERY BAD IDEA?
When you’ve shot them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow...
Yes. We’re Soldiers, not psychopaths.
100% agree. . Imagine if the third Reich only received precision attacks. An enemy need to have their hearts broken. That’s how a people finally give up.
Yes.
Exactly, it certainly made the Germans lose their thirst for war.
Nobody invaded Germany during WW I, so it led to the “stabbed in the back” conspiracy theories that helped the Nazis into power.
The aiders and abetters need to feel the pain, so that when one of their crazies mentions attacking America, they say "shut up, Achmed, you fool!
Order Curtis LeMay to report for duty
Smart bombs are counterproductive in that they dont create the horror needed to end war. To win you must demoralize the population by destroying entire neighborhoods rather than blowing up a few strategic buildings. The enemy must KNOW they are defeated and beg for peace. Without that the war just goes on forever.
From an Old Soldier
As usual, SOETORO gave his MILKTOAST response to the inhuman and brutal murder of the Jordanian pilot. . ..but then again, what else should we have expected from him?
Personally, I say, “do unto others as they have done unto you”. . ...take that female ISIS bomber out into the public, make her walk to her death as they did the pilot unto a cage, then pour gasoline over her head. . ..trail it out into the sand as they did the pilot, then lite the fuse. . .. . ...
Until the world starts treating these bloodthirsty animals EXACTLY as they are treating the world. . .. . .they deserve no respect as human beings and without force applied in a MANNER THEY UNDERSTAND, they will never be defeated. . ...the first rule of warfare is simply :
1. The are no rules in War.
2. The second Rule of Warfare is:
Treat your enemy with the same degree of ruthlessness as they have display against you. . ..if you expect to win. . .otherwise you might as well surrender and accept your faith before the war starts.
3. The third Rule of Warfare is:
Fight to win. Don’t fight to win a draw. don’t place restrictions on those who have to do the dirty fighting and don’t compromise, don’t negotiate, and don’t stop until you have eliminated the last standing enemy combatant from the field of battle. . .. . .even if that will take you and your nation a hundred years.
4. The fourth Rule of Warfare is:
Show no mercy because you will not see mercy if your enemy wins.
5. The fifth Rule of Warfare is:
Fight your enemy down and dirty, and in the same manner he is fighting you. The “Marquis of Queensberry” rules do not apply to modern warfare.
5. The sixth Rule of Warfare is:
Write the history of the war engagements down in true a fashion so that future generations may learn from the mistakes of their forefathers,. . . or be prepared to go to war and do it all over again.
6. The seventh Rule of Warfare IS:
Remember that politics cease when a war begins. More wars have been lost throughout all history by politicians, than by the soldiers who were doing the fighting. If it is worthy of going to war in the first place, then it’s worthy of committing the soul of the nation to a victory. . .otherwise you will feel the heel of your opponents boot on your neck for a long time thereafter.
Just the thoughts of an old soldier that has been there. The Rules are real, and so is War.
8. first you must imprison the lawyers for the duration
Exactly.
There is a technical term for a people who aren’t willing to do whatever it takes to break the will of the enemy, for a people who are ‘above’ being thought of as psychopaths, people who play nicey-nice in the face of an enemy who glories in burning a caged man alive.
That term, when history bothers to remember them at all is: “the losers”.
