Oregon first-grader humiliated by school’s punishment after being 1 minute late to class
NY Daily News ^

The family of an Oregon first-grader is outraged that his school forced the boy to sit by himself during lunch as punishment for being late.

The boy’s grandmother, Laura Hoover, took to Facebook to protest his retribution with photos of Hunter sulking into a cardboard wall blocking his view of a cafeteria bustling with his peers.

“His momma’s car sometimes doesn’t like to start right up. Sometimes he’s a couple minutes late to school. Yesterday, he was one minute late,” Hoover wrote. “This is what his momma discovered they do to punish him.”

His mother, Nicole Garloff, came to check on little Hunter at Lincoln Elementary in Grants Pass on Tuesday and ended up taking him home. She found him staring at his stark food tray in tears over the whole ordeal.

My son is there to learn not to make this fat stupid teacher feel good. If he is out in the hall, he is learning that abusive people are cruel and nothing else.

That is so laughable you ought to be writing jokes for Letterman. If your son was there to learn, he wouldn't need to be sitting in the hallway. He is sitting in the hallway because hes isn't there to learn. I would also bet that a parents attitude has a lot to do with that.

Kids showing up late interrupts the entire class. The teacher has to repeat everything for one special little snowflake and the rest of the class gets annoyed. Back in the day, we got spankings, had to sit in the office and miss all of class or had our desk moved into the hall. Sitting by himself is a very mild punishment. Maybe, tomorrow, little snowflake will encourage Mama Snowflake to get her butt into gear and get him to school on time.

Maybe from now in little hunters momma will start the car earlier. Maybe from now in little hunter will be on time.

Yeah, they should bring back the stocks and the kid should be placed in them in front of the school in winter weather. That will learn him.

Stupid mother probably has to work until May just to pay the taxes that support the fascist state that would do something like this to a 6 year old kid. This is abuse, plain and simple.

I am interested in not making her son into a woman hating pyschopath. When exactly did teachers take control over all of society? We must bow to them?

So the message you would rather send is that "if you break a rule, there are no consequences". Yes, that would be better. Instead of being a woman hating psychopath he would hate any and everyone who even tried to hold him accountable for his actions.

And of course your child was innocent of all wrong.

Zero tolerance doesn’t apply to teachers, just to the kids. Teachers are allowed to bully and abuse with impunity. If you try and stop it, the administration will shrug their shoulders and plead there is nothing they can do. They don’t possess the character necessary to deal with these issues and they have absolutely no power over the union that protects abusive teachers.

The cardboard screen seems a bit excessive, but separation from one’s friends at lunch time was a commonly used punishment in my elementary school.

Yep, it was, but for things we had control over, namely our actions or behaviour. This boy can't control whether his mother's car will start.

You put the ball squarely in your court, now tell us how you’d punish the parent.

Waiting...

Still waiting...

Those idiot educators are against bullying, unless of course they are doing the bullying. These tiny minds can’t understand that they have created a bullying situation among the students now. This kid will be picked on now because the “educators” have made the case.

If this happens regularly then the school should contact social, services about his tardiness

Ah yes, the ultimate Nazis. I'm sure they'll fix mom's car.

I find that the first instinct of so many on here is to punish, disturbing. How about helping her? If it really is a car problem, maybe someone has a husband who could help her?

Ask her to come in and explain to her that having her son late all the time is disruptive. People don't always get it. Even if they should get it, they don't. I am just so glad that I don't have to deal with most of you. No compassion for anyone, ever.

He is sitting in the hallway because hes isn't there to learn.

True, some kids are not there to learn learn anything. And not only that, but of these, some are there with the purpose of making sure (if they could have their way) that their friends aren't going to learn anything either. Again, this is something that many parents don't understand, because they aren't there to see.

Again, what did this first grader do to deserve public humiliation?

Heck, my kid had to spend lunch recess doing dishes in the school kitchen for a week one time for speaking out of turn.

That was something YOUR KID did.

He drives the car? He maintains the car?

The "life lesson" this kid is learning is that you will get the shaft for what other people do, no matter how hard you try.

Great lesson.

The cheerleaders for this kid's punishment here make me sick.

This is public humiliation? Oh, the outrage! The humanity! Oh, just shred your clothes out on the courthouse square! Oh, the horrors of it ALLLLLLL!!!!!

Reading through this thread has answered why FR has dropped to far in web ratings. It’s due to all the mamsy pamsy liberal headedness that’s infiltrated what was once a solid conservative site.

No wonder so many people hate conservatives. Judge now - ask questions later.

But, 'judge now, ask questions later' isn't a conservative trait. It's a character flaw we often accuse the Liberals of--the knee-jerk reaction.

Well some of these ridiculous liberals can’t deal with normal boys except to humiliate them. You know what? You are being tiresome.

How about helping her?

It's not enough to have to put up with junior's crap, teachers got to go fix mommy's car too. In the winter they're gonna be shoveling the driveway... else junior's gonna be late again.
