A lawsuit filed against the maker of a popular dog food has triggered concerns among California pet owners.
Frank Lucido of Discovery Bay, a community in Northern California’s Eastern Contra Costa County, said his 8-year-old bulldog, Dozier, died three weeks after Lucido switched his pet’s diet to Purina’s Beneful dog food.
On Feb. 5, Lucido sued Nestle Purina PetCare Company in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California, alleging the dog food contains propylene glycol, which the suit said is an animal toxin used in automobile antifreeze; and mycotoxins, a group of toxins produced by fungus that occurs in grains.
Lucido also said his 11-year-old Labrador, Remo, and 4-year-old German Shepherd, Nella, are still recovering from kidney failure, lethargy and diarrhea.
"We have a dog that is still on a touch-and-go situation right now, and a decision might have to be made and I’m kind of dreading that right now," Lucido added.
The suit seeks unspecified damages, and a guarantee that Purina’s products are “safe for dogs.”

Purina Beneful was one of the prime displayers/sponsors at the Westminister Dog Show. Many of the trainers/owners said that was what their dogs were fed. Purina was giving out sample packs to everyone.
Get in touch with dog show people in your area. I think there are groups on Facebook, etc. You should be able to buy raw food in bulk like we do. We will split a box of chicken backs with our daughter. It works out to $.29/lb. We also get duck necks and various other parts that the slaughter houses virtually give away. This means you need to have a freezer. We have a 15 cubic foot upright.
We try to sign up all our puppy clients on the B.A.R.F. World flash frozen raw food. It is a lot easier to handle then the above mentioned ideas. They ship you this directly to your house in a styrafoam freezer box.

You can probably split boxes of parts with someone else that lives within 10 miles of you. We also supplement with canned squash or pumpkin. When it goes on sale, I will buy multiple cases. It always goes on sale prior to Thanksgiving. There are also coupons you can get from Libbys on EBAY to cut the cost down. You can also add green beans(canned, frozen, fresh). Carrots are also something to give them in their crate time to keep them busy.
Most of the dry dog food is just filler. It is indigestible for your dog. Therefore, it goes right through them. This means that you eventually need to pick it up. With raw, that is reduced by at least 50%. Also, dogs that can not lose weight, shed it on the raw diet. Dogs do not need carbs.
Purina sponsors the show. Dog show people will take anything that is free. Professional handlers that are on the road will feed different than most breeders like us.
DinoVite is awesome. Our 9 yr old terrier German Shepard mix, Baxter, started losing clumps and clumps of hair. Not mange, not fleas, he was just going bald in spots. We have used the DV (added to his Iams at dinner) and in less than a month he has shown improvement. Hair is slowly filling in, but he’s peppier. His eyes are clear and quick again. And he doesn’t “arg” when he plunks down. We had switched his dog food late summer to BENEFUL to save money (Im layed off). One of our sons (he considers Baxter “his” dog even tho he is now married and lives away) bought the DV. I have decided to put the next order of DV on credit card I feel that strongly about the change I’ve seen in our furry boy.
We’re a Blue Buffalo home for our dogs and cats.
Wellness here too. I try to vary between lamb and chicken, but stay away from the fish ;-)

Since Wellness is a specialty brand, on those occasions when we run out before being able to restock (and have to go to the regular grocery store) it’s Kibble&Bits. Which she will inhale like crack.
My mother used to order in a truckloads of meat that was labeled as “unfit for human consumption”. As I recall, it had charcoal mixed in to it as a “don’t eat this” signal to humans. Dogs and cats loved it, though. Pretty sure it was cheap.
My dogs are large farm mutts. They exist solely to prevent criminals from making entry into the garage and back side of the house.
I buy their food according to price. Under a certain price point they do not like it.
I train them using puffed Cheetos.

When I was into dog shows way back in the ‘80s, before there was Petco, show people were (including in publications) very snooty about what food. Never in a grocery store, they said. Purina was grocery food.
I went to a small local feed store both in my home town and when I lived in CT (up into mid-’90s) to get “the best” foods. Back then it was still limited - generally you could get Iams, and Science Diet at any specialty store. I got NutroMax/Natural Balance because my vet said my dog might be allergic and the Lamb & Rice could help, which Nutro had way back then.
Now many of them poo-pooh Iams and SD as about as bad as Purina.
I can’t imagine dog-show people seriously using Purina. Maybe for a buck, when the cameras are rolling.
Onions are poisonous to dogs.
I make my own silver solution. Its easy. Great to rub into their cuts and scratches too, as it makes the wound heal up a lot faster.

I looked up ID wet food and the price crashed my computer!

Cats.
No its not actually..my sister buys them in packages of I think 16 cans..Nemo has a very sensitive tummy so for him wet food helps him the most..so we give it to Maxie too, who doesn’t have a sensitive stomach but he loves the ID wet food..they are both hooked on it
