VISALIA — The personal handgun of an off-duty police officer accidentally discharged at her home and hit a family member, Visalia police said Wednesday.
The unusual incident happened about 10:07 p.m. Monday.
The adult family member, a female, suffered wounds that were not life-threatening wounds and had to be hospitalized, but was alert and conscious throughout the ordeal, police said.
Her name and how she is related to the officer were not released to protect her privacy, police said.
Patrol officer Amerie Norman was at home and a personal handgun was out when the gun accidentally discharged for reasons that are still unclear, police said. The bullet went through a wall and hit the victim, who was in bed sleeping.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Department was asked to investigate and report its findings to the police department.

It went off all by itself! Guns do that all the time!!!
Hopefully for her, this is a family member she is on very good terms with. Otherwise, some may suspect it was accidentally on purpose.
A friend of a relative of mine (their close friends) killed his own daughter when a gun he was handling, went off in the home. The just about destroyed him!

or like that since no name was released otherwise it would be Husband Robert sleeping in the next room.
Maybe someone should check the State of California’s “safe firearms registry” at the Attorney Generals office. Another stooopid California requirement.
The folks who want us to accept that only police can be trusted with firearms just can’t make themselves use the words “negligent discharge” here.

Non-cop would be in jail, their house searched and all their firearms and ammo permanently confiscated.
Just a fact.
They should end the gun to bed without supper for its bad behavior.
