McConnell Backs Off Clash With Democrats On Iran By Olivier Knox

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday backed off plans to fast-track a vote on legislation, opposed by the White House, that calls for lawmakers to be able to reject or approve a future nuclear deal with Iran.

The decision came in the face of stiff opposition from Senate Democrats who signed on to the bill but said they would oppose it if it came up before a late-March deadline for the United States and five world powers to reach an agreement with Tehran. Their stance ensured that the legislation would fail to advance in a test vote that had been expected on Tuesday.

“The Senate will turn next to the anti-human-trafficking legislation while Democrats decide whether or not they believe they and Congress as a whole should be able to review and vote on any deal the president cuts with the leaders of Iran,” McConnell spokesman Don Stewart said by email.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), the measure’s principal author, welcomed McConnell’s decision as a stepping stone to building a veto-proof majority in support of the proposal.

Latest episode of kabuki theater. Liberal McConnell wastes oxygen on a transparent pretense of being the opposition.

The collapse of the GOP can’t really be hidden anymore.

And they aren’t bothering to hide it anymore.

WTF is wrong with McConnell? I know that he has balls the size of BBs but it seems like he is demonstrating that he lacks a brain and common sense also.

He’s not backing off anything. He works for the Administration and the Democrats. His job is to keep the republicans from being too disruptive and to expedite the Sultan’s program in the Senate.

When were there any during the latter half of the twentieth century, aside from the fellow who was president from 1981 to 1989?

Not a collapse, but a merger. Ongoing for many decades. One-party rule is the goal.

More than one person has called it “kabuki theater”. They are all on the same side with the pretense of a two-party system, albeit a transparent pretense.

I have two very basic, fundamental questions about this discussion.

1. Why is this being discussed as a matter to be voted on? I understand that the Constitution requires Senate ratification of treaties. Or has it now been suspended?

2. How did the USA get appointed/elected/chosen to be the prime(?) only(?) negotiator with Iran in this matter, to the apparent exclusion of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, or any of the other concerned countries in the immediate region?

“The collapse of the GOP can’t really be hidden anymore.”

It’s not really a collapse per se. The GOP is a lobbyist supported and driven party now and these issues are low priority to the corporate lobby supporting the GOP.

They’d rather back out of real fights and not rock the boat.

Keep that in mind when trying to assess the machinations of the current Congressional GOP.

Down the road they are going to have a hugely more difficult time selling themselves to the base and GOP voters in general because they just don’t give a damn about the constituents that vote for them. A voter is an enabler to the current GOP, nothing more.
