The "Gin is Sin" crowd in back.

They never left - they just beat up on different recreations for a while.

How about research into a drug that would counter the effects of alcohol in minutes?

There ya go!

Pop a pill about 20 minutes before leaving the bar to drive home and be safe. ....Pop a pill before bedtime after drinking too much at home and wake up with no hangover.

replacement for alcohol is coffee after lots of drinking : )

I have never known anyone (myself included) who was ready to sit down and drink tons of coffee at 3am after some hard drinking for hours.

(and somewhat later, soft drinks like Coca Cola)

...and the cocaine was removed not because of possible concerns as to what negative effect it would have on people but because with the cocaine in it was to be regulated and taxed as a medicine. To this day, the only company authorized by law to refine cocaine in the USA (malincrodt i think) removes the cocaine from coca leaf extract and sends the decocainized extract to Coca cola for inclusion in its syrup.

Western man has done pretty well using cannabis for thousands of years, during the same time they rejected alcohol as an intoxicant.

Look at the peoples of the world that largely have done the opposite.
