Coming Soon to NY: Ice Age Ice Cubes

An abandoned solar energy factory in Glomfjord, Norway is being repurposed.

Norway’s Renewable Energy Corp. filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and closed its solar manufacturing plant.

Starting this fall, the former solar factory will be used to ship black refrigerated boxes containing ice cubes cut from the Svartisen (“black ice”) Glacier to upscale bars and restaurants in New York, London and Dubai.

Svartisen, which is located on the country’s northwestern coast, is Norway’s second largest glacier and the lowest one in mainland Europe.

Geir Olsen, who founded Svaice last November with a 250,000 kroner grant from Nordland County, hopes to ship 16 million boxes of the glacial ice cubes (“remains of the last ice age”) annually.

1. WHAT! A solar company filed bankruptcy and went out of business?

2. Maybe the un will step and declare Svartisen a world heritage site under agenda 21.

3. How big of a gaping "ice hole" will this create?

4. Won't this accelerate glow bull warming by reducing the cooling that comes from this glacier?

Went on a cruise to Alaska one summer, they served cocktails one evening with ice from the glaciers in Glacier Bay.

A solar energy plant that operates in a region that gets some 20 hours of sunlight during the summer couldn't make a profit?

'Course, the place gets some 20 hours of darkness a day during the winter, but still.

I guess even if it was at the equator, by the end of the year it would have gotten the same number of hours of daylight.

Well, I’ll be damned. The really smart people in New York City will pay good money for ice from Norway. Maybe I can sell them some dust from Africa to spread around their apartments.

Olsen claims that glacier ice has a better taste and, because it has been compressed for centuries, thaws more slowly than regular ice cubes.

When did the NEA take over Norway's schools?

First they waste valuable resources by manufacturing worthless solar panels, and now they want to destroy a glacier? Sounds like a conspiracy.

So while the hoi polloi are sitting in their cosmopolitan bars and restaurants sipping Manhattans (or sitting in their Manhattan bars and restaurants sipping Cosmopolitans) kvetching about the disappearing glaciers, the glaciers will be disappearing in their cocktail glasses!

And they won't even strain a brain cell contemplating the irony that the ice was brought there thanks to a failed solar power plant!

How wonderful it must be to be a Liberal.

thaws more slowly than regular ice cubes.

There may be some truth to this. Glacier ice is typically compressed snow with a certain amount of air. So it has a lower density that "regular" ice. The presence of air bubbles could certainly slow heat transfer and make the ice thaw more slowly. The part that is not mentioned is that if there is lower density due to trapped air there is also less btus to transfer to the drink.
