No more ‘prommunism’ for Albuquerque seniors
KRQE-13, Albuquerque ^ | March 10, 2015 | Tina Jensen

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Seniors at an Albuquerque high school whose plans for an unusual prom theme sparked interest and criticism from around the country have landed on a new prom theme: Prom.

It’s their way of taking back ownership of their prom theme, after the suggestion of a communism connotation created a backlash they weren’t anticipating.

After KRQE News 13 reported that students at Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School voted on “Prom-munism” as the theme for their spring formal dance, news traveled fast.

Some headlines pointed out the irony of the theme: “Students democratically pick communism-themed prom.”

Others were outraged. According to head administrator Sam Obenshain, some of the emails the school received were threatening.

He says students never intended to make light of the atrocities committed under communist regimes.

Showing up emaciated from the Gulag swill is one way to get girls’ attention.

Or the forced labor crews in Siberia could cool down the heat. It is New Mexico.

If that is too hard core how about a nice Struggle Session straight out of the Cultural Revolution or North Korea.

He says students never intended to make light of the atrocities committed under communist regimes.

I believe this is true.

I sincerely doubt that these student have ever even been taught about the atrocities committed under communist regimes.

They've probably never been told anything other than how wonderful communism would be if only "the right people" were running things.

When you get an education from gov’t schools you are taught that communism wasn’t such a bad thing. That it lead to various positive things.... I can see schools idolizing Stalin because he was an ally in defeating Hitler. Or that he brought USSR steel production and electricity

You didn't know Communism was a sensitive issue? What do you think's been going on in the world for the past 70 years?

I have yet to EVER see one of these when they've been mentioned in a news story...

If you are gonna go full NORK, then no food at the prom. Think of it as healthful cost cutting.

He says students never intended to make light of the atrocities committed under communist regimes.

“Some people felt like even the choice of the theme, ‘prom-munism,’ was intended to make light of atrocities that were brought about because of the communist regimes. That was never our students intent.”

No one really believes this.

If these kids had ever even remotely seen Communism and its effect, the thought of a "prom-unism" would never have entered their mind.

Then they didn't know about those outrages because YOU didn't teach them, Sam. You should be fired, you bastard.

Neither would a Mexican-based theme with a sombrero-covered man dosing against a wall.

First thing they would do is depose the prom King and Queen.

They can hold it, but every kid has to spend 6 hours in their own KGB Lubyanka prison and endure interrogations. Half the kids will be disappeared and won’t be going home to Mom & Dad. The other half will emerge emotionally scarred for life.
