Netanyahu legacy on the line in Israeli vote

JERUSALEM (AP) — As Israelis prepare to vote in parliament elections on Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finds himself at a fateful crossroads: Make history or become history.

If Netanyahu can lead his Likud Party to victory and secure a fourth term in office, he will move closer to overtaking the nation's iconic founding father, David Ben-Gurion, as the longest-ever serving premier — and cementing a status as the dominant Israeli politician of the past two decades.

But if Likud stumbles and finds itself in the opposition — a real possibility, according to recent polls — the Netanyahu era could end with a resounding thud, concluding a career that many would say brought few major accomplishments beyond longevity. Iran and the international community seem headed toward a nuclear deal that Netanyahu abhors, and a resolution to the Palestinian issue seems as distant as ever.

"If he leaves office, he won't leave any dramatic changes," said Yoaz Hendel, a former aide to Netanyahu. In a turbulent region, one could say "this is the best thing to do," Hendel said.

The Israeli campaign is widely seen as a choice between two world views: Netanyahu's focus on Israel's many security challenges — he has long been a voice calling for zero tolerance of terrorism — or his opponents' focus on Israel's social problems and high cost of living. It also touches on his support for Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, which the opposition and the outside world detest.

But on a basic level, the campaign is simply a referendum on Netanyahu, a polarizing character who is adored as "King Bibi" by his supporters and reviled by his detractors.

The fact that the Israeli opposition is ahead shows you those ZisraelIsrael are ou there. But, this shouldn’t be a surprise as we’ve seen this for many years. It’s nothing new. There are even voters “to the right” of Netanyahu who want to dump him!

Sometimes, even great men are voted out of power, because people see them as needed for a certain time only. Recall how Churchill lost all his influence in England after helping Britain win two wars.

I hope Bibi hangs on, for the stability of that country, but it would’nt surprise me if he did not. Recall how our own country has twice stabbed itself in the proverbial belly by electing President Obama/Jarrett.
Even with a certain degree of voter fraud, it should never have been that close, if people were thinking vs just feeling.

Well ... actually ... Israel was formed in 1948 under the leftists. And for most of Israel’s history, it’s been under control of the leftists. So, just because the leftists are in control doesn’t automatically translate into Israel’s destruction ...

Yeah, and God’s will is to see the Antichrist take control of the world and to see the Jews driven out of Israel and being hidden and protected in the Wilderness ... so I guess we better “get on with the plan”! ... :-) ...

It's not looking good there ...

There are 120 seats in the Israeli Knesset. So in order to form a government you need a minimum of 61. Even if Labor takes more seats than Likud they will still be 36 or 37 seats short of a majority. So if they are asked to form a government they they're going to have to attract enough of the smaller parties to form ruling coalition, and there are more right wing parties than left wing. So Labor may have the first crack at forming a government but it's far from certain that they will be able to succeed. If they can't the Likud gets their chance. When the dust settles I think Netanyahu will return but with a shakier coalition than he has now.

I understand that’s been put forth by other commentators, but in politics it’s far from a given outcome. Everything is is up in the air at this point ...

Actually its not Gods will to see the Antichrist rise to power. He just knows man will someday succumb to evil. We are a weak, pathetic and greedy species. The fact that the Israel election is even a close race tells you everything you need to know.

If he loses, he will consider his political career a failure. He was confronted with an existential threat from lunatic “death loving” mullahs who made their apocalyptic intentions clear. Netanyahu, for whatever reason, failed during his tenure to deal definitively with the threat.

I concur.

I wish Star Traveler would just tell us what his issue is with Bibi.

Quite possibly, many Israelis, like the young and dumb in America - have no memory of or have not been taught about the Holocaust.

Many people who were not around in WWII actually think they can negotiate or make nice with the same mentality of people who would, if given the opportunity, implement the 'final solution' today.

Just listen to the useful idiots in most of our universities...they are so deceived.

God's will be done - no matter who Israelis choose.

May God Bless Benjamin Netanyahu.
