Lost NM dog found 1500 miles away, 8 months later: 15-year-old Border Collie found alive in Illinois

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —One New Mexico dog pulled off a truly incredible journey.

Josie disappeared from a farm in Rincon, New Mexico, eight months ago. Josie’s owner is Racheal Carpenter. Her family farms everything from pecans to cotton to onions. Josie disappeared during last July’s harvest.

“She was gone long enough that we just quit looking,” Carpenter said.

The family figured Josie had wandered off and died of old age. But an unexpected phone call from Oswego, Illinois, proved them wrong.

“They said, ‘We found your dog,’” Carpenter said.

Josie somehow ended up at an animal shelter in Joplin, Missouri. A rescue group sent her to a woman in Oswego who takes care of older dogs. When she got sick a few weeks ago, the vet scanned her microchip and revealed her true owners.

“To be that old, and then be that far away from home, but to be found alive, we were in shock,” Carpenter said.

The Carpenters drove 20 hours to be reunited with Josie. They still don’t know how she went missing, but said that doesn’t matter.

“You get one good dog, and she’s my good dog,” Carpenter said.

Border Collies are smart dogs. We’ll never know how Josie ended up 1500 miles from home.

We’re glad she’s back safe and sound with her family.

Awwwww, that is wonderful :)

There is nothing worse than losing your dog, and nothing better than finding your dog.

I am going to hug my good dog who is right here at my feet.

A 15 year old dog in human years is like a 90 year old human.

I don’t know how the old girl made it to IL.

One of these days they’ll be telling you how you can do this with your children (microchip).

They’re having a blast, alright.

Are they related?

My dad bought an Australian Shepherd when I was born. The dog didnt die until I finished basic training 19 years later. The crazy thing is was that he was perfectly healthy and chasing cars until he finally met the one to do him in, we still had to put that bugger down. I am convinced he had another couple of solid years in him until the big car in the sky called him home.

She looks like it but the vet says she’s not really fat. Just full bodied.

Not related. She’s a Corgi mix and he’s a Jack Russell

I’m glad you identified the breed. I thought it was an overfed beagle. . . tells you how much I know.

Dognapped. It happens when people don’t take care of their dogs and let them roam.

We have a Pit/ Border Collie mix. She is so sweet with Gran Kids and crawling babies, licking them non-stop. She likes to heard our cats around. She is a family protector though! A tough but sweet Gal!

My woman had a ‘stray’ dog come upon her at a gas station and even jumped into her truck. She was so tempted to drive him home and adopt him but she figured maybe he was from the area and could find his way home back to his human.

A friend of mine adopted a Border Collie. She lived in a small city, The poor dog was so used to rounding up sheep that it needed some activity. It’s solution was the round up all the kids on bikes in the street.
