“For improved pilot survivability the Ka-50 is fitted with a NPP Zvezda (transl. Star) K-37-800 ejection seat, which is a rare feature for a helicopter.[20] Before the rocket in the ejection seat deploys, the rotor blades are blown away by explosive charges in the rotor disc and the canopy is jettisoned.[21]”

“The dual rotary wing set themselves make for a huge target without mentioning the mechanical nightmare it takes to run them. I wonder how well that contraption auto rotates to make a safe landing?”

The Ruskies have run contra rotating props on aircraft forever so at least they’re not starting from scratch.

Bull. There are places in eastern Europe using similar choppers for cropdusting. They are 50 years old, sitting next to as old tractor, receiving similar maintenance to these tractors and still safely flying.

Bailing out of a helo is bailing into the rotors.

The Ka-50 (52)'s main rotors are equipped with explosive bolts to jettison the blades moments before the seat is fired.

"The real test...NOT."

Sorry to burst your bubble, but 'Sakorski' has copied the compound blade concept.

They called it the X2, but cleverly hid their involvement in the project by calling it a 'Sikorsky'.

And it is the fastest damned helicopter in the world.

Eurocopter and their X3 may beg to differ...

Learn something new every day.

In reference to original thread, its unlikely the S-97 will be subjected to similar low tech maintenance as the Ruski counter rotor will be.

The X2, and the Airbus Helicopter X3, are experimental testbeds for high speed compound helicopter concepts.

The X2 is being developed as the S-97 Raider, along with the SB-1 Defiant as contenders for future Army programs.

However, the Obama military budget would make you think Sikorsky is just pissing money down a rathole.

The real test on whether or not that design is the “Cat’s Meow” is how fast Bell and Sakorski have copied it...... NOT.

You mean like Sikorsky's S-97?

X2 = S-97. Maybe only one exists.

Could be these designs will give better lift, the greater point regarding maintenance. The russian versions, like other Russian mil stuff is mostly destined for 3rd world. Maintenance by 3rd worlders flying these won’t long, bet ya.
