Germanwings Co-Pilot Deliberately Crashed Plane, Says Prosecutor
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 26, 2015 | Robert Wall and Inti Landauro

The co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525 appears to have deliberately crashed the plane after he was left alone in the cockpit, according to a French prosecutor.

The captain was intentionally locked outside minutes before the A320 crashed into an alpine mountain ridge, French Prosecutor Brice Robin said Thursday. Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, a 28-year-old German national, was silent throughout the plane’s descent and was alive at the point of impact, according to the prosecutor.

Mr. Robin’s conclusions are drawn from the plane’s cockpit voice recorder, recovered at the crash site in the French Alps late Tuesday and analyzed by French accident investigators on Wednesday.

The recording contains screams believed to be from passengers, once they recognized the plane was crashing.

Investigators are now exploring why Flight 9525 went into its unauthorized descent from its 38,000-foot cruising altitude with one crew member absent. The descent led to the crash about 10 minutes later.

French air accident investigators said on Wednesday they extracted information from the jet’s cockpit voice recorder. The recording contained voices and other sounds, said Rémi Jouty, director of France’s aviation accident investigation office, which is leading the probe. He added that there was no explanation yet for why the plane went down.

Germanwings, the low-fare unit of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, hasn’t disclosed the identity of the pilots....

Were the fighters already up there on some exercise, or was that totally false? WItnesses saw three jets just before the crash.

It’s pretty obvious that the gay depressed Muslim butler did it, Watson.

Military jets at high altitudes must either be under ATC control in an enroute phase, or operating in a military special use airspace. The time required to respond to such an occurance is wayyy more than was available, under any normal circumstance.

He was into physical exercise and was seen with “bags of health supplements”. Steroids?

Please, every German or European I’ve ever met has wanted to go to SF and have their picture taken on or near the GG Bridge, and it has nothing to do with being gay.

True. A bit like Neuschwanstein the other way round.

Besides, even if he were gay, which I doubt, that wouldn’t make him crash the plane into the side of a mountain. Especially now, since gays practically rule the universe.

I can imagine being gay being a major stressor, if you're in a conservative work environment, working for a religious organisation, family companies with traditional values, the military or law enforcement etc.. But the airline industry? That's one of those places where it really doesn't matter one way or the other.

Personally I fear this might be one of those cases where the public probably will never really know what went on in the co-pilots head.

True- though something of that import is going to be damned near impossible to keep secret. Someone with either a conscience or an inability to stay quiet will tell.

The mindboggling thing to me is that Lubitz was breathing quietly and calmly while heading straight into a mountainside at nearly 500 mph.

I guess an unusual combination of drugs or one hell of a sudden?? psychosis could be a possibilty.

>>My husband had a large stroke, and he breathed normally for the first few hours. He was panic stricken, but you couldn’t tell from his breathing.

The inside lock mechanism works for 5 minutes and then turns off. It needs to be turned on again via a button on the flight console. Had the co-pilot been disabled, the 18 minute descent would have been over in 5 minutes. He must have re-toggled the door lock at least 3 times.

If he had shot up a school because of his mental condition, we would be talking about firearm laws instead of what caused his mental condition.

Wow the airlines will be making fat stacks and be booked solid for a good many weeks...

The stampede of ambulance chasers flying all over the world to descend on all the families who had loved ones on those planes will be epic.

If we go back to St. Paul’s words: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”, everything happening in the world today makes sense.

I read that it was 18 minutes, which would make a difference.

I’m kind of curious as to how the voice recorder was accessed so soon after being found. This stuff usually takes weeks before being released.

Do you know the logistics of setting this door switch?

For all I know, it is located on the giant instrument panel in front of them and along with descent course, kept getting set off by his bobbling hand after his aneurysm struck.

I’ve seen too much on air disaster shows to glibly take any bit of info as certain pointer to XX conclusion.

And I’ve personally experienced scenarios that are pretty wacky with the reaction “what are the odds?” What were the odds my 1yo who was never the grabby type picking up a phone and hitting 911? Yet there was a policeman at my door asking what was wrong to a mystified me! What were the odds my uncle and his girlfriend would BOTH have medical events at almost the same time while I waited for them at my Christmas party, so no one knew where they were?
