RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl says he was tortured in the five years he was held captive by the Taliban, beaten with a copper cable as he spent months blindfolded and chained spread-eagle to a bed.
The 28-year-old soldier described his harsh treatment in Afghanistan in a letter released Thursday by his defense lawyer.

I won’t read he letter because I don’t give a flip what he says happened to him.
He is a deserter, he is a traitor, good men died because of him....he should have already been executed.

We in Canada were taken for $10.5 million in the case of one Maher Arar. Compensation for their "mistake". Tried to sue the USA as well. He was a Syrian national with Canadian citizenship. Canadian security informed American counterparts in New York that Arar was landing from Tunisia. He was shipped to Syria in 2002. Nearly a year in a 3feet x 7 feet deep cell, beaten with cables. So he said.
A week after release he was as sharp as a matinee idol. This safe in Toronto. The left wing media howled to high heaven about the rotten Canadian government in calling him a threat. From his description of torture, he would have been lucky to be in a wheelchair. Should have been on a stretcher maybe.
No one ever thought to have him carefully examined. Few dare call him for what he is, now living and being a so-called human rights guru. Excuse my off topic rant.
Remember - when he asked dear old dad if he should desert, dad said: “Follow your conscience.” For that alone, Dad should be in prison right next to his kiddie.

I readily admit I would be wholly open to nearly anything he says if he had been captured.
But he wasn’t captured, he deserted, and that doesn’t even seem to be in question.
If they tie him to a bed and beat him with a chain, that is between him and the side he consciously chose, and nobody else’s.
To me, he ceased to be an American and member of the US Military at that point.
The First Amendment assures him the right to desert because of his freedom of opinion (I guess).
It also assures him the right to face the consequences for his deeds.
