IN 1997, I was sexually assaulted by a fellow student at the University of Virginia. At a closed hearing, the universitys committee on sexual assault found him responsible. His punishment? A letter in his file.
Its not clear how many women have won their cases through the universitys system since they were first allowed to enroll as undergraduates in 1970. I am one of the women who won, but winning wasnt really winning, was it?
The hearing on my case took place in March 1998, two months after a criminal trial that ended in disappointment and frustration for me when the judge dismissed the charge that the Commonwealth of Virginia had filed against my attacker.

It does. But we can't change our entire system of justice for these events.
I don’t want to change the system of justice. False accusations are just as bad if not worse and society needs to be protected from that. I was just addressing the limited point of whether or not date-rapes actually happen.
At a certain point, the moral education of young women has to count for something. If it doesn’t, and girls go out on fraternity gang-dates with heavy drinking and swallowing pills and smoking weed, some are going to get raped. It’s going to happen. Period. That’s all I’m saying.
LOL.
Who died and left you in charge?
its time someone said the obvious..
Here's the obvious: Post your nonsense over at the lefty sites. You'll fit right in.
He was - and acquitted.
Kid not every male in these threads think they are entitled to every woman and especially the silly girl who gets herself drunk at a frat party...
Most are real men...and are married and faithful to their wives...
again I will say...the thing to do is keep it zipped up...
HEY !!! then you cant be so called “falsely accused”...
poor widdle you...
I'm not sure your assessment of "most men" is accurate anymore, but my advice for my kids tends to be in line with yours. Also, if you're at a party where a bunch of people are getting drunk, it's best to leave.
Where did I say that women don’t get raped?
Nope, I’m now a total bore. I drink at home!
Treated as children when they make mistakes.
Exactly.
You have no idea how often it happens. Drugs are readily available. It's not unusual for someone to spike a girl's drink when she is not looking. A smart girl keeps her hand over the top of her glass. Even if she is drinking ginger ale. Many times that's what she is drinking.
Those of you who think it isn't happening are projecting your own values onto todays college students.
The correct analogy would be walking through a bad part of town to find thugs to hang with and then are surprised when they beat the crap out of you. You make it sound as if this woman just attended a party where alcohol was the main attraction to just do some fingerpainting.
“Personally, Im tired of these campus rapes - I can only have so much sympathy for dumb broads who drink, dope, have sex and then wake up and cry Rape! Thats what happens when you have so many women crying wolf. At some point, people stop caring.”
I’m with you. If I’m ever on a rape case jury, the prosecution better be iron-clad - such as an abduction/rape by a total stranger. Anything less, they will have a very tough time getting me to vote to convict.
Dismissal and aquital are 2 different things. The case could have ben dismissed on a technicality. We tend to become upset over that, when a perp walks on a technicality and it’s fairly clear the perp is guilty as sin.
In virtually EVERY case, the woman admits she was drinking.
So was her partner.
What seemed like a "good idea" at the time by both parties involved, when the woman wakes up from her drunken stupor, only the man is to be blamed.
This is NOT a case where someone slipped her a mickey against her will, then took advantage.
Now THAT'S a rape.
Like Lena Dunham, she doesn't really know what happened.
Except that "Barry" could possibly, might have, perhaps had sex with her.
And Dunham ADMITS to drinking excessively, taking Xanax, cocaine, and who knows what else.
Now Dunham has recanted her fable.
So unless someone can point to where a woman was drugged against her will, I find the stories skeptical.
BTW, no true gentleman would ever take advantage of an unwilling woman.
...record everything that occurs on the date. Ew!
So you agree the NYT shouldn’t have used the headline?
Men have been spiking drinks since the dawn of time. In my day, it was LSD. That’s why you don’t drink heavily at parties and you hold on to your glass - particularly if you are partying with strangers. If you know that - and I know that - why don’t these girls know that? Where are their parents with the good advice?
“So you agree the NYT shouldnt have used the headline?”
???
I didn’t see either word, “dismissal” or “acquittal,” in the headline.
You saw “sexual assault” though, despite your not having seen the word “conviction” anywhere.
