What’s wrong then with popcorn, candy and soda? Its cheap for the most part - yeah, its junk food. Just like your kibble.

I use "kibble" to be evocative. It would be designed to be nutritionally balanced; e.g., the most common formulation would be the typically recommended 40-30-30 mix of carbs, protein, and fat with the right blend of vitamins and minerals to meet USDA recommended amounts at the appropriate calorie consumption levels.

Whether that comes formulated as dry bite-size pieces (such as like a cereal) or in some form of bar (like a PowerBar) or even something like a MRE is really irrelevant. The point is that it's a basic, no-frills, healthy and life-sustaining food that is openly and readily available, and that if you want something different or better, you can pay for it yourself.

After my daughter was born, my wife and I moved from our pricey in town apartment to an area with lower...rents, to save money for a house. I can tell you from my own eyes that recipients of benefits lived a consumer lifestyle an order of magnitude above mine.

Of course, no one dreams of micromanaging corporate welfare for people who don’t really need it in the first place.

So, preventing the purchase of filet minion with food stamps is "punishing the poor"? Then what policy changes would you prefer to see that would prevent the abuse by people who don't need the help, without effecting the ones who do?

Because if the ones who really need it are not abusing the system, then the policy changes being proposed won't effect them anyway.

If you kick the illegals off, their illegal employers might have to raise their wages. Can’t have that.

How about we make only rice and beans eligible for purchase with EBT? They’re very nutritious and it would cut down on obesity.

If you want to buy junk food, soda, filets, etc. do it with your own money, please.

It might be that that idea would work better if it started out being introduced by a private company. With crowdsourcing it should be possible to get funding. Hire a nutritionist to design it, partner with some local privately-run food pantries, and see what happens.

EBT goes for food. Welfare goes for everything else.

Actually, EBT just stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer - it's basically the debit card on which benefits are provided. An EBT card may have both SNAP/WIC (food stamps) benefits and cash welfare benefits on the same card - in that case, the cardholder can use the food stamp benefits only to purchase approved items, but can use the cash benefits to purchase anything else (or to just take out cash at an ATM).

But they’re self-righteous in dictating to poor people what they should eat.

Nice disingenuous try at changing the discussion, but no one is dictating what they should EAT, simply what they should BUY with public funds.

We all know that if you cut off food stamps 95% of the people on them would not starve, but would be forced to cut back on their beer, wine, cigarette, pot, and scratch off lotto ticket purchases - things that those who vote for a living rather than work for a living regard as their entitled birthright.

Clearly, changing the software code to restrict such NON-necessities is not punishment. They should never have been allowed in the first place. Liquor? No way. Tobacco? No way. Any non-food items? No way. The EBT card should be heavily restricted to a narrow class of foods—period!

Actually, I’ve been doing nutritional research and have several menu plans that provide 100% or more of every nutrient. And when seasoned right, they can be darn tasty! If it was in the form of an MRE, or even as 4 cans in a box, one box per day, it could be done right now.

If I send you a couple of menu plans, would you be willing to run with the project?

Screw that! Why are they receiving welfare at all? Terminate it! All charity should be private and local.

If they aren’t doing it then how are they being punished by stopping it?

Half of the problem is solved by requiring the female membership of the family, 13 to 43, to receive a Depo Provera shot every 90 days for the SNAP cards to be refilled.

What are the allowed items for EBT? What are the rules about getting “cash back”? Please provide the details if you wish to convince us that it is “just food” that the “poor people” need.

The only way I get cash is to go to work every day and collect a paycheck. Same way I get food.

How do they handle the families whose children receive 2-3 free meals each day at school, and then the family still gets EBT benefits (food stamps)? Doesn’t it seem like it is not fair that I have to work to provide money to feed the same children several times each day?

People are not getting these benefit programs mixed up. Working, tax-paying people are getting frustrated with having to work so long and hard in order to provide benefits to people who choose not to work, especially when so many of those who choose not to work seem to have high expectations of what they should get from the rest of us.

Reasonable suggestion, but it’s better to just terminate it and let churches and secular charities pick up the slack. Welfare is unconstitutional and immoral. It’s bad for the taxpayers, bad for the individual recipients, and creates societal ills.

Terminate it. Once again, from a great man:

For a time in high school my daughter dated a kid from such a background. Every year when their income tax EITC refunds would come they’d rush out and spend it on the latest PlayStation and home entertainment systems. While letting the taxpayer pick up their food bill. Did not take her long to notice and move on.

The REAL support for Food Stamps comes from Campbells, Tyson, Kraft, Hormel, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, etc.

They’ve licked the age-old conundrum, how do I sell my product to people who have no money?

This proposal will die because retailers want it dead.

What I find funny and offensive is some conservatives becoming the food police.

"Food Police"?!? Seriously? By the logic that brought you to this statement, I gather you have no problem with other government policies and programs that are rift with fraud, waste and abuse, which conservatives have a beef with, also, right? I mean, if the public can't dictate how the money is spent in this instance (EBT/ Food Stamps) then it shouldn;t be able to "police" other things, as well. After all, it's all in the "interests" of society for EBT/Food Stamp recipients to be able to use their cards at strip clubs or Auto Zone, and eat King Crab and prime cut meats.

Hey, those are the FIRST items Battin should keep off HIS family’s table.

If Brattin is working to make the money (which he does), then he can damn well place what ever he wants on his table. If Brattin is using MY money to put food on his table, then I should get a say on what he can use that money for, to ensure it is not being wasted.

Financial fungibility is a concept lost on most liberals and people who defend the wlfare state, and self righteousness oozes from them as they point fingers at the financially responsible and make nasty comments.
