Newtown Police: No More DUI Volunteers

The Newtown Police Department made the call, and the people responded.

Days after the department posted an unusual request on its Facebook for local residents to volunteer for a field sobriety training session, the 20 spots filled up almost instantly.

“We would like to thank everybody for their support and willingness to participate in the upcoming training exercises in May,” a representive posted on the department’s Facebook page Wednesday. “We have received an overwhelming amount of responses and have forwarded those to the agency in charge of training. At this time we are no longer accepting further applications. Again, we truly appreciate the response from those willing to help keep our community and the surrounding communities a safer place.”

According to the original request, the 20 volunteers will be given alcohol and food while officers monitor the levels of intoxication

Reminds me of why I moved out of Broomall 36 years ago, and have never looked back. (OK, I miss the corned beef on rye from the Lawrence Park deli, but it probably isn’t there anymore anyway.)

At least they now have the addresses of the most compliant two residents when they need help rounding up the rest of them. Oh, did I say resident? I meant Kapo.

This reminds me of the episode of WKRP in Cincinnati where Venus Flytrap and Johnny Fever took the alcohol test on air with the trooper monitoring their responses. After every drink Dr. Johnny Fever would get a better score.

Didn’t Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon do something like that for real?

Then you could head down to the Tastee Freeze by Sproul Lanes for dessert.

They still have Sproul Lanes? I used to bowl there back in the 70s when I lived in the apartments behind the shopping center. Brings back memories...

Pretty much standard practice when conducting the 40 hour Standardized Field Sobriety Training classes. The alcohol is strictly controlled with each volunteer being watched at all times.

Sproul Lanes may be gone. I haven’t lived in the area since 1988, so I’m not sure. Lawrence Park Lanes and the theater are long gone.

FWIW, my first stateside job was Christmas temp help in the sweater section of Lit Brothers, which (if Google is right) is now the Main Line Health Laboratories. Got my first credit card at W.T. Grant, where T.J. Maxx is today. From what I can see on the map, Mrs. Marty's Deli is next to the grocery, which is not where the Lawrence Park Deli was when I lived in Broomall; it was either at or right next to where the Pet Valu store is.
