Former Obama pilot: TWA Flight 800 was not blown up by a faulty fuel tank; it was shot down.

Was TWA Flight 800 shot out of the sky?

As a former pilot, that is a question I get asked about all the time.

I’m no conspiracy theorist, but let’s be clear: Yes. I say it was. And I believe the FBI covered it up.

LOOK BACK: REPORTING THE CRASH OF TWA FLIGHT 800 ON JULY 17, 1996

There are many reasons to disbelieve the official explanation of what happened to TWA 800 almost 19 years ago, on July 17, 1996, off the South Shore of Long Island. There’s hardly an airline pilot among the hundreds I know who buys the official explanation — that it was a fuel-tank explosion — offered by the National Transportation Safety Board some four years later.

Lots can go wrong with an airplane. Engines can fail; they can catch fire. Devices can malfunction. Pilots make errors.

But jets do not explode in midair.

If they do, it’s usually because they’ve been shot down or bombed. There’s little to suggest that there was a bomb onboard, but there is ample evidence that a missile of some sort detonated in the air very close to the plane and brought it down.

A former colleague, who will remain unnamed because he was not authorized to speak publicly about this, served as one of the lead investigators representing the interests of the TWA pilots, and I talked to him at length about the investigation after it was completed.

I have also spoken with another former TWA employee, who has knowledge of what went on in the aftermath of the crash.

I’ve got my 19MAR96 TWA 800 ticket stub tacked to my office cube wall right in front of me. I was on TWA 800 shortly before the incident. I tend to read TWA 800 threads on FR.

I was watching a television news broadcast sometime around 2002. George Stephanopolous was listing terrorist attacks that had previously occurred. He casually included TWA 800 in the list. I backed up my DVR and watched it again to verify that I had really heard him say that.

Flight 800 is pretty much my only conspiracy theory.

I was a bit of a JFK conspiracy theorist until I read Gerald Posner’s book, Case Closed, which put an end to that.

Seem a bit odd there were naval ships training in the area and many credible people saw what they believed to be a missile or flare going up towards the aircraft.

I personally never believed this aircraft simply exploded due to some internal issue in the aircraft.

BTW, thanks.

Wouldn't the possibility that a surface-to-air missile system was being tested inshore, adjacent to the flight path out of JFK, be essentially...zero?

No. The purpose of the test was to prove that they could take out a drone with a missile in a crowded Commercial airline corridor without hitting the wrong target.

The test didn't go very well.

I think not.

to protect the reputation and good name of the United States military.

The exercise that was being conducted was a JOINT exercise and involved several nations.

Ultimately the US military was responsible, but it may or may not have been fired from an American Ship.

Did they ever find the man of middle eastern descent?

No, but he's probably working in the obama administration by now.

And what is with trying to escape in a car with no plates?

The foxes were drawn to the bloody rabbit. If you want to escape the cops, make sure they are chasing someone else.

Of course, some say the explosion blew the rear tag off. Which would indicate poor planning on his part.

One thing for sure. We will never know the exact truth.

You are correct. I need to reword it.

The purpose of the test was to take out a drone in a Military controlled airspace that was right next to a commercial airline corridor.

Exactly.

They were trying to undo, well at least negate what happened to Iranian aircraft 655.

I have a lot of data about that incident, it’s interesting that when it happened, the Internet was just starting to be usable as a research tool.

But it doesn’t matter now.

Who do you think recovered the plane?

The U.S. Navy, at the request of the NTSB.

Gee, it wasn't the people that were covering up what actually happened, was it?

Maybe you have drunk too much conspiracy Kool-Aid. I said that there was no evidence of a missile strike. You are saying that everyone from the Navy and the NTSB who had anything to do with the recovery and investigation was lying then and has managed to maintain the coverup for 20 years.

has any fuel tank explosion happened on any other plane in history?

A 2007 article says there have been 17 such incidents since 1960, although TWA 800 was the worst.

Here are a couple of others:

This proved to be an assassination attempt. The explosion was actually caused by explosives (RDX, PETN, etc.).

I don't find it odd at all. People see what they want to see. How many of them have actually seen a military surface-to-air missile in flight? It's quite a sight to see, especially at night. And none of the descriptions I've seen resemble one.

Here is one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDAS_%28missile%29

The Brits messed with using some Blowpipe missiles from a sub. The French and Germans have messed with it too. Also they have test fired sidewinders from the launch system normally used for tomahawks (TCLS). Don’t make an absolute statement if you don’t know what you are talking about.

I did not say it was likely. Rather the opposite. But if you start saying things are impossible or don’t exist without googling first you just set your self up for embarrassment.

The plane wasn't that high up. It had just taken off from JFK airport and was still climbing.

Oh I don't feel embarrassed at all. Now, if I took a weapons system that is being experimented with now, and said it might have been tested 20 years ago, by an entirely different country, in the busiest air corridor in the world, and really thought that was a possibility, then I'd be embarrassed.

Agree and another is his stance on CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) - a well documented and debilitating condition - not just “laziness” as Rush has said.

Maybe the OKC bombing was the first or maybe it was RFK’s assassination.
