Jeb Bush: Wouldn't have changed anything in Schiavo case
Politico ^ | 04/17/2015 | JAMES HOHMANN

Looking back 10 years later, Jeb Bush said Friday he would not have handled the Terri Schiavo saga any differently.

“I don’t think I would have changed anything,” the former Florida governor told a woman who asked him about the case at a “Politics and Eggs” event put on by Saint Anselm College’s Institute of Politics.

Bush, gearing up for his presidential campaign, has faced renewed scrutiny over his role in the prolonged controversy from 2003 to 2005, during which a brain-dead woman from the Tampa Bay area became the subject of a contentious legal fight between her parents and her husband over whether to keep her on life support. Bush sided with the parents, who wanted to maintain a feeding tube. Ultimately the husband – who remains deeply resentful of Bush – prevailed at the Supreme Court.

“I stayed within the Constitutional responsibilities or authority that I had,” Bush told the crowd of local business leaders. “We changed the law first, and a year later it was ruled unconstitutional. Then basically we didn’t have the ability to do anything. The federal government tried to intervene, and that was also ruled unconstitutional.”

“So she starved to death,” he went on, turning somber.

What was done to her is not something I can forget or forgive.

The people that did this to her don’t know if she felt it or not, and they didn’t care one way or the other.

My assumption is that she felt it, because to assume otherwise makes it easier to stomach, and it makes it easier for it to happen again.

I don’t like Jeb Bush as a candidate and wouldn’t vote for him if he is the nominee. Don’t understand the criticism on the Shiavo case though. He was firmly on the side of the family and did fight to keep the feeding tube and turn her care over to her parents. Comments on this thread make it seem that he killed her himself

I don’t think he killer her himself. I think he allowed it to happen on his watch.

I would have done whatever it took to stop that from happening in my state, even if it resulted in jail for me.

That was a truly hideous thing that happened.

“A police-escorted ambulance whisked her from her hospice in Pinellas Park to a nearby hospital to have her feeding tube put back in....”

Yeah, but finish the story.

Circuit Court Judge Greer found out about the automatic stay—an auto. stay, pursuant to state law—and lifted it.
JEB found out, and caved.

This is pretty much his position on Lynch: `go along to get along’ with death-dealing Democrats.

He’s not a murderer. He’s a weakling who stood by and let murder be done on his watch.

I will not vote for him under any circumstances.

Why is Jeb going out of his way to rub his anti-conservative views in our faces? If he gets the nomination, it would be the ethical obligation of constitutional conservatives to leave the party!

And if it's hillary vs Jeb, let hillary have it. The country's going down anyway unless we get someone conservative and intelligent for Pres, so why help the backstabbers win? This would not even be a situation where they can pretend one candidate would be the "lesser evil" (not that I believe there's such a thing as a "lesser" form of evil)

grrr......

He should’ve taken her into protective custody and risked being at odds with the courts, early on. Jeb lacked courage.

Jeb was all for murdering Terri, he just acted like he wanted to save her to get his name out there.

That was Jeb’s golden moment but he blew it. He could have stepped in using his authority as governor and rescued Terri from the ghouls. Sure it would have started a firestorm but Jeb would have been a conservative hero. Oh well... no Oval Office for Jebbers...

Jeb had an OBLIGATION as governor to protect Terri and he refused to perform his duty. He had the DUTY to command the state national guard and state police to take custody of Terri if he believed she was being murdered; if he believed her killing to be legal, then he wouldn't order it.

A probate judge DOES NOT have authority over the governor of the state.

I am not aware of a single instance in history other than Terri's where a county judge was allow to nullify a lawful Congressional subpoena.

Yea, but he knows most Americans have never heard of Terri Schiavo. And tens of millions wanted her dead, had a visceral hatred of her to some extent.

If Mr. Schindler had been a big GOP donor, it might have all turned out differently. Money talks for the American people.

Well, Jebbie is not saying now that he was on the side of the family. I guess Jebbie has reversed himself once AGAIN. I am not voting for him no matter what.

Would stepping in and making sure she was fed and given water be within his authority?

I’m disappointed that he didn’t do something to save her.

Terri's murder was the test case for death panels. The only thing the politicians cared about were the constant polls that revealed which pro-death tactics worked the best.

If Jeb had wanted Terri to live he would have taken her into custody by force if necessary and worried about the political consequences later.

Oh, I thought Jebbie meant he didn’t mind at all that Terri died. I must have mis-read this; but I am still opposed to Jebbie, a Nero-like person on things important.

He’s already said positive things about a vote for Lynch.

Like Rand Paul, every time Jebster opens his mouth another anvil falls out and lands on his political career’s big toe.

I don’t want to defend Jeb. I’m not a fan. I hope he doesn’t end up running for President. If he does run, I hope it loses badly early in the primaries.

But Governors do not have the authority to ignore court rulings. Nor do we want the to have that power.

It seems to me, many just responded from the title, not the article or the history.

I to am opposed to Jeb being president.
