A member of the House of Lords has said the Republic of Ireland should consider rejoining the Commonwealth.

Lord Diljit Rana said Ireland needs to have a “rational and serious debate” that must not be “governed by historical distortion, but rather recognize the truth of today and recognize that the Republic of Ireland has much to offer and lots to receive.” […]

Ireland left the British Commonwealth in 1949 under the terms of the Republic of Ireland Act.

Lord Rana said there would be no disadvantage to the Republic joining the Commonwealth and that the economics benefits of being a member can be seen in Northern Ireland, where India is now the second biggest provider of foreign direct investment, the Irish Times reports. …

Churchill wanted Ireland to black out because German bombers were using their lights for navigation; the Irish left the lights on.

Bad idea. GB should leave Ireland to the Irish.

The EU restored the political union, and has no intention of letting them go; and even if the UK did leave, Ireland would still be ruled by foreigners. That’s why I regard the whole thing as a joke these days. Ireland submits its national budget to Germany’s Bundestag, a body they have no representation in whatsoever versus the Westminster parliament where they did have representation and could even direct the course of the entire British Empire.

Lord Rana came over to England (and thence to Northern Ireland) from India. I have a feeling Dublin’s answer was along the lines of “lulz, you lot first.”

Not as much as the lefties like to announce.

I’d say that post-1949 was a rather dark page in the country’s history, where they started dismantling infrastructure and driving away foreign investment.

I’m of irish ancestry. Perhaps that factors into my perspective.

He’s only suggesting Ireland join the Commonwealth. People are reacting as if he suggested joining the United Kingdom. Not the same thing.

So am I; I lived there for nine years too.

When I finally read the Third Amendment to Ireland’s constitution, I was disgusted to learn that de Valera sold out Ireland, undoing all his advertised efforts to make Ireland independent of one empire only to yoke them even tighter to another one. All of the anti-English rhetoric I had been fed for most of my life came into question instantly, and a lot of it just dissipated into thin air.
The State may become a member of the European Coal and Steel Community (established by Treaty signed at Paris on the 18th day of April, 1951), the European Economic Community (established by Treaty signed at Rome on the 25th day of March, 1957) and the European Atomic Energy Community (established by Treaty signed at Rome on the 25th day of March, 1957). No provision of this Constitution invalidates laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the State necessitated by the obligations of membership of the Communities or prevents laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the Communities, or institutions thereof, from having the force of law in the State.
For a number of centuries, the Irish had legislative power in Westminster, and could even have had the home rule they claimed for a long time they were seeking by an act of that parliament. Ireland’s 1948 independence lasted a mere 24 years and they sold it to the EU for a bowl of pottage. Ireland nowadays is virulently anti-Zionist (hence antisemitic), which they were not when I was living there.

It’s not the place it once was by any stretch of the imagination.

They rejected the Commonwealth (in the form of a Free State, officially a Commonwealth Dominion) in favor of being independent, in 1948. And then 24 years after that, they sold themselves to the EU.

Revenge for what?

So is this anti-Churchill sentiment in sympathy with Obama?

A genocide save for clear evidence of a murderous intent?

What genocide?

If there were anything close to that, it was fomented by the Irish absentee landowners, who were the initiators of rack-renting and insisted on all non-potato crops as rent; not to mention the leftists in Ireland who exploited things for political gain and helped throw society into confusion.

They seem to be embracing them to a degree; the press is calling Islam Ireland’s “fastest-growing religion”. The Clongriffin mosque in north Dublin is to have a capacity of about 5,000 when completed.

So a million died in six years because of the moral evil of the selfish, perverse and turbulent character of the people? Ok - if you say so.

That’s what the history books say. That’s even what I learned in school back in Ireland, even though it was framed as the merciless Protestants seeking to wipe out the innocent Catholics.
