BOSTON (AP) First, the jury was shown large, vibrant pictures of the four people killed in the Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath. Then prosecutors pulled out the photo they saved for last: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev giving the finger to the security camera in his jail cell.
This is Dzhokhar Tsarnaev unconcerned, unrepentant and unchanged, federal prosecutor Nadine Pellegrini told the jury that will decide whether the 21-year-old former college student should be executed.
The penalty phase in the Boston Marathon bombers trial opened in dramatic fashion Tuesday, with prosecutors portraying Tsarnaev as a coldblooded killer and Americas worst nightmare.
The government then began trying to drive home the horror of the attack in heartbreaking detail by calling to the stand what is expected to be a long line of witnesses who lost legs or loved ones in the April 15, 2013, bombing.
I remember hearing just bloodcurdling screams. I just remember looking around, just seeing blood everywhere, sort of like debris falling from the sky, said Celeste Corcoran, who made her way to the witness stand on two artificial limbs.
She told the jury that the blast hurled her into the air and left her in such excruciating pain that she wanted to die.
William Campbell III, whose 29-year-old sister, Krystle Campbell, died in the bombing, testified that because of a case of mistaken identity, a nurse initially told the family that the young woman was in surgery and would survive. Hours later, they learned from a homicide detective that Krystle had died almost instantly.

Well, everyone is entitled to an appeal.
Much as I would like to personally draw and quarter him, I would hate to be sentenced to death without an appeal myself, so...
Personally I would prefer that terrorists not be tried in civilian courts.
My son was there that day. He was one of the “Elite” runners and was sitting in a bar having a beer when he heard about the carnage. He is (among other things)a trained paramedic. He raced back to the finish line to offer assistance. I and my daughter-in-law spent several frantic hours trying to contact him. He finally called us from one of the hospitals in Boston. He was fine, but the lady he aided was injured.
It was a long day for us.
OK by me. Military tribunal is ok...then a firing squad with no bag over the head...I want him to see the whole thing.

I can imagine it was a long day for you and the wife.
Glad your son wasn’t injured and congrats to him for aiding the injured.
It’s too bad the cops shooting at the boat two years ago didn’t have better aim.
Amen to that.
All I need to know.

This part of the trial is stupid. MA does not have a death penalty, so what is the discussion for? They’re never going to execute his worthless ass and wouldn’t if they did have the death penalty.
Just send him off the the worst prison they can and hand out some durable shivs to a select group of prisoners to carve him up with after they have their way with him for a couple of months.
Justice done and they don’t have to say they carried out the death penalty.
Bets on whether he somehow pardons him? I might start a pool on a Bergdahl pardon as well.
Joker will get life in prison but run into a case of “suicide” shortly thereafter, guaranteed.
A pardon for Bergdahl wouldn’t be a surprise but anyone pardoning this slimeball would have to look behind him the rest of his life.
If it’s life, “suicide” would be appropriate.
This is a U.S. court, not a Massachusetts court.
“...by calling to the stand what is expected to be a long line of witnesses who lost legs...”
In these types of attacks (I think of so many in Israel in the past), as terrible as it is when we read about the dead, is all of the MANY others that will have life-long severe injuries.
Well said, many will have to live severely disabled and some in constant misery.
He needs to spend “The rest of his life” before this year ends.
In Massachusetts? Only ig he commits suicide. Which is a possibility.
Matters not whether it is Fed or state, they reserve the death penalty for those they deem to be enemies. McVeigh was rightly executed but the Unabomber with his political leanings is not.
The asshole is muslim. Every excuse possible will be trotted out to save him from being executed.
