Ted Cruz knocks Scott Walker on immigration
Washington Examiner ^ | 4/24/2015 | Drucker

Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday took a shot at rival presidential contender Scott Walker for comments the Wisconsin governor has made regarding immigration policy.

Cruz opposes comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for the estimated 11-12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. But the Texan is a big proponent of legal immigration and making adjustments to U.S. law that would facilitate more legal immigration. He criticized Walker for suggesting that he supported limiting legal immigration if it has a negative impact on the wages of American workers.

"There is considerable bipartisan agreement outside of Washington that we need to improve and streamline legal immigration so that we can remain a nation that welcomes and celebrates legal immigrants," Cruz said in an interview with the Washington Examiner during a brief campaign swing through Las Vegas.after cost estimates came in higher than anticipated.

I think it is a mistake for any politician to on the one hand embrace amnesty, embrace a pathway to citizenship for those who are here illegally, and on the other hand seek to restrict or punish legal immigrants," Cruz continued. "I am the son of an immigrant who came legally from Cuba. [President Ronald] Reagan referred to legal immigrants as Americans by choice and there is no stronger advocate of legal immigration in the U.S. Senate than I am."

"I think the right approach is to secure the border, follow the rule of law and embrace and improve legal immigration," Cruz said.

Walker has conceded a change of heart on immigration policy as he gears up to launch a 2016 presidential bid. The governor, 47, previously supported a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants. Now he is opposed. Supporting a pathway to legalization or citizenship could be problematic for a Republican candidate seeking his party's White House nomination.

But in a recent interview with conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, Walker appeared to move farther to the right on immigration than even amnesty hawks like Cruz. Here's what Walker said, as reported by Breitbart. (read more)

Gov. Walker tried to get to the right of Senator Cruz by seeking to curb legal immigration. I thought Walker would eventually have to pull a "Pence" on that position. Here, Sen.Cruz challenges Walker-- we'll see how it plays out.

As a Wisconsin resident I’m a big fan of Scott Walker. My sense is that he is a political animal when compared to a man like Cruz.

As in he’s more canny and skilled or as in he’s more likely to act on political expediency?

Not being a wise guy here. Just wondering what, as a local, your reading of him is.

Boy Cruz is one shrewd guy.

In one fail swoop he made Walker look like a kook, and himself look a little less fringe to the low information voters.

Cruz or lose

You’re kidding right?

The people that are legally coming here have taken to a long, difficult, and expensive effort to become American citizens, and they are in no way the problem.

Lumping then together with illegals is a sure loser.
Like how many of these legal immigrants are heading to the welfare rolls after spending YEARS going through the process?

We dont need to put that on hold, we need to stop the illegals completely.

that includes a path to citizenship for the estimated 11-12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.

That number is much much higher

As I said in my first post, we’ll see. Cruz isn’t much of a “flip-flopper” - but you could be right. We’ll see.

We’ll see what happens, but to come out against LEGAL immigration is a hard position to sell. Walker saw political advantage there- we’ll see if he can hold it.

I favor a halt to all immigration for 25 years.

There really is no reason to import foreigners until more Americans are working.

We need to put a stop on all immigration, legal or not. A moratorium of at least thirty years to assimilate the ones already here makes sense.

The thing I find absolutely hilarious (and ultimately unacceptable) about the Walker policy is this.

He says he wants to limit legal immigration if it costs U. S. workers jobs.

Then he says he’ll find a way to keep illegals in the nation if they pay a fine. We know damn well they cost American workers jobs.

The guy is a liar from the word go.

Immigration is discussed starting at 9:20 and the “...a way can be found...” is located at 10:20

At 3:10 Scott discusses whether Obama loves the United States or not. In this discussion he agrees that anyone who seeks public office has to love this country, so Obama must love this county.

Do we have any Conservatives at all here who think Obama loves this country? We have known what John McCain thinks. Now we know what Scott Walker thinks.

I kinda sick of "political animals". To me, they're people who have to stick a wet finger in the air before making a decision.

Cruz is a very intelligent guy. In some ways, he's too intelligent to be a pol. By that, I mean that hyper-smart pols will occasionally go out on a limb - do the political equivalent of climbing Everest just because it's there - in their political statements just to see if their debating skills can take them back from the brink. In contrast, a pol of normal intelligence is always careful, never speaks off the cuff and thereby avoids unforced errors. Here's to hoping that Cruz can discipline his impulses and bend his intelligence to his will - all the way to the White House.
