BREAKING NEWS – At least 71 people died after a powerful magnitude-7.9 earthquake shook Nepal’s capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley around noon Saturday, Nepal's Home Ministry says.
Sky News also reports that at least 50 people are trapped underneath rubble of the city’s iconic Dharahara Tower, one of Kathmandu’s landmarks built by Nepal’s royal rulers in the 1800s and a UNESCO-recognized historical monument.

The last I read (according to BBC News) was around 565 dead—and the death toll may go much higher, due to a number of historic buildings being destroyed, too.

This is horribly ironic, as when I read about the Chinese planning a tunnel under Mt Everest it was the assurance of such earthquakes that came to mind...Mt Everest & the Himalayas are still being pushed upward; I await the data on how much higher the range is today.
Now ‘watch’ for the Foundation ‘names’ who will be happy to take contributions....while the money river flows...

I reported the Nepal quake last night on the freep a thon thread.....knowing full well since it’s a poor smaller country the news would soon be saying just where you can donate.....so watch to see those Foundations who come up...as well as those that pop up.
Many of the buildings that went down were the centuries old buddist or hindu temples....and they have oodles of them...that’s why the entire sky was full of dust from this quake.
