Another Texas Republican Took a Swipe at Ted Cruz. See How His Spokeswoman Returned Fire With These

The subtweet: It’s how everyone from your neighbors’ kid to Justin Bieber chucks insults and criticism online without directly naming their target.

Add Sen. Jon Cornyn (R-Texas) to the list of subtweeters.

On Saturday morning, the Hill noted that Cornyn seemed to be lashing out at fellow Texas Republican — and presidential candidate — Sen. Ted Cruz with the tweet below.

FYI: Cloture ends debate only. It does not confirm a nominee. Otherwise a subsequent vote on whether to confirm a nominee is meaningless.

— JohnCornyn (@JohnCornyn) April 25, 2015

“FYI: Cloture ends debate only,” Cornyn wrote. “It does not confirm a nominee. Otherwise a subsequent vote on whether to confirm a nominee is meaningless.”

As the Hill noted, Cornyn seemed to be chastising Cruz for skipping the final vote on the confirmation of Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch — especially given Cruz’ outspoken opposition to Lynch.

Cruz was the only senator not present at the Thursday confirmation vote, apparently because he needed to get to a fundraiser in Texas that evening.

Cruz’ camp has long argued that cloture was what mattered.

“If the Senate could get 60 votes for cloture, they could get 51 for final confirmation,” Cruz spokeswoman Amanda Carpenter tweeted Thursday. “Cloture is the only vote that mattered.”

When Cornyn’s Saturday subtweet surfaced, it didn’t take Carpenter long to fire back with a series of tweets.

“If [Republican] leadership could hold up vote for leverage on legislation they could have stopped it to, you know, support the Constitution,” she wrote. “They didn’t.”

Read the blistering tweets below:

Since I've been offline I see there has been cont'd debate on Lynch. 20 R's who voted yes for cloture paved way for her confirmation. Simple

— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) April 25, 2015

It's for them to explain why they would vote to shut off debate and allow her to be confirmed. Cruz said to stop her at every step

— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) April 25, 2015

Cruz said the Republicans should stop her in committee. They didn't.

— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) April 25, 2015

Cruz said GOP leadership should not bring her to the floor. They did.

— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) April 25, 2015

Cruz said R's should not vote to cut off debate and go to a final vote. 20 R's did. Leadership wanted her to be confirmed. It's that simple

— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) April 25, 2015

After 20 Republicans joined with Democrats to give green light to the final vote, which needed only 51 votes, it was over folks.

— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) April 25, 2015

If leadership could hold up vote for leverage on legislation they could have stopped it to, you know, support the Constitution. They didn't

— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) April 25, 2015

Cornyn seemed to acknowledge the Cruz camp’s point in a tweet later Saturday.

True, debate continues indefinitely “@StocktonFirst: @billpostmus But you can't have a confirmation vote if cloture isn't invoked. .”

John Cornyn was one of the 20 Republican Senators that voted for cloture, ignoring the damning evidence against Lynch, thus clearing the way for confirmation. He then turned around and voted NO on confirmation to pad his phony conservative voting record to wave in the air the next time he is up for reelection. The guy is a complete fraud.

The informed, conservative voters in Texas are on to Cornyn's DC Double-cross scam and his office is hearing from us.

Ted Cruz has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to apologize for in this matter. I couldn't be more proud of the job Cruz did to oppose the confirmation of Lynch at every opportunity.

Great job, Amanda!

Portman has been an unreliable dirtbag; nothing more than a RINO. No conservative chops at all.

Sad. We are witnessing the death of a once great nation; and it’s coming at the hands of the very officials the ‘people’ put in charge.

Patriotism among the ruling elite is a scarce commodity.

Can’t have it both ways corn fool. You should not have voted for cloture then vote against her. You facilitated her nomination. I would pick Cruz over you any day.

And I just got a whiny email from Cornyn begging for money ostensibly to stop Obama.

Cornyn is against the rule of law. Pure and simple (that he is).

Indeed. Cornpone’s as bad as Midge McConnell. They both hide behind their dirty trick cloture votes and attack their own with Dim/Alinsky tactics, when exposed.

Cruz should in detail call out the ‘Rat Mitch for continuing to run his kabuki theater of the absurd.

Cornyn and his staff are too stupid to realize that we're on to the GOP-E's little cloture game. Vote first for cloture but then against the commie nominee to claim that they were actually against her.

That lie don't work no more ever since Cruz exposed it.

Cornyn thinks his constituents are stupid.

Enough of them returned him to the Senate, so he skates, apparently, whatever he does. I didn’t vote to return him.

Instead of playing his silly game and pretending he has a point, I like that Cruz cut to the chase, and does not back down about it.

A lot of those Redumblicans aren’t up for re-election, and are in safe seats even if they were. Therefore the are just Constitution hating Socialist light and should be treated as such.

“Sen. Cruz could do nothing given that the SCUM GOP party
(undocumented Democrats, all) support every treason,
every lie, every atrocity, and every corruption they see.”

Right on!

I wonder what good it would do to elect a conservative president anyway. He would have no backing from the legislature. They just seem to roll over and give it up for whatever Obama and the Democrats want. No reason to think they would suddenly see the light and back up a good president.

“I think it would be classy of Cruz to say,”

what is obvious is that you know nothing about how the Senate works. The leadership allows cloture ONLY when they have the votes for the final vote.

Since that is what happened here - You need to apologize for being not so smart

“He won’t even take my calls now”

John Wayne McCornyn - He is just like the filthy 1% democrat that he is.

Too late. This ass is in for the next six years. And do not forget he is the No.2 man in the Senate.

Even if Cruz gets elected this ass will be working against him

Too late. This ass is in for the next six years.

Stop with the defeatist attitude.

It isn't too late. We've got 6 years to work out how to defeat him. I won't be around then according to the MDs, but I can help start the work.

Same with Strauss, except the 2 year thing. We've got time to plan how to get rid of him, and start doing the hard work to get that done.

Getting Cruz elected senator in the first place wasn't a cake-walk.

So lose the defeatist attitude. It isn't too late. We're just in time to lay out a good plan and do the hard work.

Their little cloture tactic is getting some exposure. Highlighting that their “no” vote for confirmation later should be seen in light of the “yes” vote for cloture.
