Drinking just 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks a day linked to liver disease

According to the World Health Organization, excessive alcohol drinking is the most common cause of cirrhosis worldwide. A new worldwide study presented at The International Liver CongressTM 2015 has shown the significant influence of daily drinking on this disease burden. New data shows that the cirrhosis burden caused by alcohol increased by 11.13% when moving from the moderate to heavy daily drinking (up to one drink/day for women; two drinks/day for men) classification (p<.001).

Most studies assessing the prevalence of alcohol abuse as a risk factor for alcoholic cirrhosis focus on total annual amount drunk per person. However, the researchers highlight that clinical studies suggest that it is a high daily consumption which is the strongest predictor of alcoholic cirrhosis. This new research concluded that heavy daily drinkers most significantly and independently influence a country’s cirrhosis burden.

According to the World Health Organization’s Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health, around 6% of global deaths are caused by drinking alcohol, the majority from alcoholic cirrhosis – scarring of the liver as a result of continuous, long-term liver damage. Half of all cases of cirrhosis are caused by alcohol.

The researchers analysed the WHO’s Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health, which included parameters of alcohol consumption and drinking patterns from 193 countries.

Reducing heavy drinking should therefore be considered as an important target for public health monitoring and policies.

I understand that some racial groups process alcohol very slowly because of their enzymatic makeup. Maybe they are more sensitive to liver damage? Was this taken into account in the study?

LOL. I drink a glass of red wine a day (remember when that was good for you?) I guess I'll up that to 3 glasses.

How's about we let them fight it out with the other 'scientists' who say a glass of wine or 2 a day is good for you? Or are these guys just another bunch of grant-seeking grubs trying to justify their existence [and another government grant]?

We could tell everyone that these are the guys who made the great tasting fast-food french fries go away years back...

It is ALWAYS about the money. Grants, published papers (which translates in to tenure, status or grants and funding) or just getting tagged/mentioned in the daily drive time liberal news radio morning spew. ALWAYS the money.

Idiots.

Virtually every study ever done on MORTALITY shows moderate drinking reduces it.

Yes, there are downsides to your liver. But the upside to your heart is more important, in moderation.

No two people are alike so it varies. Fat vs skinny, ethnicity, etc.

I process alcohol incredibly fast. I always wonder if that is good or bad for my liver.

Just a couple of years ago it was “1-2 drinks a day keep the Dr. away.”

Sick and tired of these junk scientists and quacks who leech off the taxpayer teat...

Screw ‘em...gonna keep on having a couple of fingers worth of JD whenever I choose...

One can either choose to exist or live...I choose to live.

Total bull crap. One drink a day would never hurt your liver near as much as it would bring benefits to your heart and blood vessels.
I belive having a shot a day or a glass of vine is essential to live long and healthy and so thinks every person I know who lived into 90 years.

After 12 weeks without a beer [recuperating from an accident] I am looking forward to more than several Brewskis when the Cast Comes off. The connumdrum is, what brew would taste best? I am leaning towards a hoppy English ale or a heavier German Lager or Pilsner, any suggestions? I am not going to ruin my palate with a watered down American version as I did in the past..
