TEHRAN (FNA)- An informed source in Iran confirmed earlier reports that the Iranian Navy has seized a US ship in the Persian Gulf, adding that the ship is Marshall Islands-flagged, but is owned by the US.

"The ship is a trade vessel and has been seized by the Iranian navy at the request of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization," the source told FNA on Tuesday.

"The ship was seized after a relevant court order was issued for its confiscation," he added, indicating that the the IPMO had monetary differences with the ship owner.

The source said the ship is a "Marshall Islands-flagged, but is owned by the US", adding that the crew are from different nationalities, including Europeans.

The source said there could also be American nationals among the crew.

The Iranian Navy confiscated the American trade vessel with all its 34 crew on Tuesday afternoon.

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy is responsible for security of Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.

Iran's military vessels are now taking the American vessel to Iran's Southern port city of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf. . .

Except for the fact that it's a Danish owned ship crewed by Europeans and Asians.

I don't think that matters. It is were the ship is flagged. Now if it was a foreign flagged shipped O&O by US, act of war is in question but the US Navy should definitely intervene.

Makes for good cover for the administration. This must be how they plan on giving the Icrainiums some weaponry without having to worry about it being illegal. I would love to know what was on that ship for US to turn its back on this.

Maersk is a Danish company. The Maersk Tigris is owned and operated by them.

Since when do we provide military protection to Denmark? I believe they have their own armed forces.

Wait til they decapitate the “Spys” they captured. This is payback for making the Iranian weapons convoy turn back.

Did you not read the ship is flagged to the Marshall Island. The Marshall island is a associated state of the US and key strategic location (WWII history). Do you remember/know during the Iran Iraq war in the 1980's the US flagged Gulf State oil tankers so we could provide Navel and Coast Guard protection for oil tankers threatened by Iran and Iraq. Iran's action is very close to an act of WAR. Google the topic and you will find arguments supporting this point.

The Marshall Islands are an independent republic and are not controlled by the U.S.

Has that been done for the Maersk Tigris?

I don't pretend to know a lot about international shipping but I do understand what a casus belli is and seizing a foreign flag vessel in international waters certainly qualifies.

That you do not choose to read, study, understand, or even acknowledge the facts of the Compact of Free Association is your misfortune. But you can easily remedy that shortfall on your part by reading the actual document and not just someone else's interpretation of it.

There’s an abundance of deliberately ignorant fools in this topic. My respects to you for your efforts to enlighten them!

Ignorance seems to go hand in hand with laziness. All one has to do is use this modern tool called the Internet and research. However, on FR, we generally have a hard time getting ignorants to click through to the posted article. Research is a pipe dream on my part.
