Obama's Lawyer: Religious Institutions May Lose Tax-Exempt Status If Court Rules For Gay Marriage
National Review ^ | 4/28/15 | Joel Gehrke

Religious institutions could be at risk of losing their tax-exempt status due to their beliefs about marriage if the Supreme Court holds that gay couples have a constitutional right to wed, President Obama’s attorney acknowledged to the Supreme Court today.

“It’s certainly going to be an issue,” Solicitor General Donald Verrilli replied when Justice Samuel Alito asked if schools that support the traditional definition of marriage would have to be treated like schools that once opposed interracial marriage. “I don’t deny that.”

I’m curious; marriage is a very fundamental building block of any religion. Wouldn’t redefining marriage to fit your haphazard thrown together definition which is already being morphed by those who want their agenda be addressed be doing the exact thing that the constitution prohibits congress (and by exact extension, the courts) from doing? That of establishing a state religion?

I’d very much like to see that tact used in a court challenge should idiots prevail. I really want to see black robes twist themselves into knots to declare their new religion to not be a religion.

It will be the believing Christians against the rest of society.

If only there were as few believing Muslims as there are believing Christians . . .

The entire system is collapsing. It will be interesting to watch. The fundamentalists Mormon are waiting with hot breath to marry 6 women legally. I assure you there is no basic legal control if this Court declares civil right where there is none. In fact , many will marry pigs and dogs.

IF the churches lose their 501-3c status, it will free them from the IRS chains that bind them!

Then the preachers can REALLY PREACH against the evil in various political circles.

Alito might have gotten them to discuss even more clearly their authoritarian agenda ... not that every reasoning person doesn’t already see it.

I agree. If homosexual “marriage” is Federally enforced, there will be no limits on any declaration of “marriage.” The most pathetic efforts at basic logic preclude it.

The more I read and hear about the SC evaluating this... the more I am convinced the court is not going to find for the gay lobby. I think they will decide this is a state issue and leave it at that.

Yes, it does ... and constituencies who have no personal interest in homosexuality understand this.

And losing the 501-3c will be part of the "sifting of the wheat".

You have a lot of faith in SCOTUS. After Roberts and Obamacare, I have none.

]]I have said for a long time that the issue of homosexuality will be the great dividing line[[

True indeed. The final dividing line is not abortion or divorce, bad as they may be. Liberals hide their abortions and make excuses for their divorces. But gay is proud and in your face. Gays will not rest until the entire church community are beneath their boot.

If someone challenges Amish (real Amish) marriage practices in court, they’ll go down, too.

The big question is whether the pansexual regime will be imposed on Moslems. Amish don’t have a president in office and don’t blow up or behead people who disagree with them.

What a steaming pile. The Catholic Church does not allow divorced couples to get married with no threat to their tax exempt status.

I pray you are correct. I fear you aren’t, but I pray that you are. That would be the best outcome we could expect these days, I think.

Which says a lot, right there.....sigh...
