More than 500 demonstrators gathered behind Boston police headquarters in Roxbury Wednesday night to show solidarity with those in Baltimore protesting the death of Freddie Gray.
As organizers prepared to begin the rally around 6 p.m., Boston police Superintendent-in-Chief William Gross waded into the crowd to shake hands with organizer Brock Satter.
“I’m a student of history,” Gross told Satter. “If people didn’t protest what they felt was injustice, I wouldn’t be here in his capacity today as chief.”
The rally then began with a call and response chant of “Hands up!” “Don’t shoot,” and Satter laid out the demands of the group, called Mass Action Against Police Brutality.
“We have a clear message,” Satter said. “We’re gonna demand the government indict the killers of Freddy Gray. If you want peace, if you want calm, jail the killers of Freddie Gray.”
