When some crackpot commits a mass murder, we’re told we not only can’t find out the perp’s background information, but often we can’t even find out his name! (Poor little minor and all . . . )

If he posed a danger to himself or to others (he was both, imo)then he would have had to forfeit his weapons, based on the doctors’ diagnosis. In determining the nature of his “mental problems”, this is an assessment that would be quickly and firmly made.

If he was subsequently back on the beat, these records could be introduced into evidence in a civil action against the City, for negligent retention.

There was an earlier posting about Rice.

He has the equivalent of a restraining order against him, by someone he has been harassing.

The Baltimore police looked the other way, and some of his colleagues have been covering for him.

“He must be white or this would never been exposed!”

OR......he is black and the city needs to make an excuse for him.

Lt. Brian Rice, who initially pursued Gray on a Baltimore street...

I can't tell. Is that the limit of his involvement in this situation?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: In this age of instant reporting and tweets and blogs, there's a temptation to latch on to any bit of information, sometimes to jump to conclusions. But when a tragedy like this happens, with public safety at risk and the stakes so high, it's important that we do this right. That's why we have investigations. That's why we relentlessly gather the facts. That's why we have courts. And that's why we take care not to rush to judgment -- not about the motivations of these individuals; certainly not about entire groups of people. (April 19, 2013)

You’re assuming it’s even true. There has been so much BS spread about the health of everyone involved in the case.

I keep feeling like I’m watching an episode of Gunsmoke or Bonanza where a mob has decided someone is guilty and they are out to string him up regardless of the truth.

If true this cop should not have been retained on the force.

Now speaking of "looking the other way", there's the matter of the Mayor telling the police to "look the other way" during the riots.

And of course there's the matter of Freddie himself, a repeat offender who doesn't seem to spend much time in jail because the judges who sentence him seem to be looking the other way.

But we won't here much about that. We'll only hear about the rogue cop, at least as long as the BPD is not under federal control.

I remember the old days, it was much different back then.

Back then, an accused was considered innocent until proven guilty. The trial was held in a courtroom. A persons medical record was privileged and not made a public record without the process of law. This is what it was like to live in a place called America, land of the free.

Things have sure changed.

I don’t know the real name of this place I now live in, but it sure isn’t my America.

In that America, we read the news in either the morning or evening paper. We got a 15 minute national newscast from Cronkite or Huntley/Brinkley. We had Life Magazine once a month that had pictures of things we had never seen.

We seemed to be satisfied with that amount of information. If not, we had public libraries and knew how to use them.
