'Trust me' isn't going to turn Latino vote for Cruz, GOP
Chicago Tribune ^ | May 1, 2015 | Mary Sanchez

"....Like his fellow GOP presidential hopeful, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Cruz cannot count on a certain rapport with Latino voters simply because he is Latino himself. Trust doesn't work that way, not in life and not in politics. Hispanic voters are weary of being targeted as a desirable voter demographic to be flattered but not much more. They can spot the phony.

To many critics, Cruz has tried to court two mistresses: tea party conservatives, on the one hand, and Hispanic voters whom he views as ready for takeover by the GOP.

Cruz believes, with some justification, that Latinos are fundamentally conservative. Like many immigrant groups, they tend to honor faith, tradition and family. Latino communities stand out for their enterprising spirit, and the large number of small business owners among them are likely receptive to the GOP's pro-business talking points.

But that doesn't mean that candidates won't have to answer the tough questions about where they stand on significant issues. And if anything was laid out firmly in Cruz' appearance at the Latino Chamber, it was that immigration policy is a problem for him. He has to address it forthrightly, honestly and without wavering, almost as a litmus test before important stands on jobs and the economy can be taken seriously.

Chamber CEO Javier Palomarez pressed Cruz on the point. He noted that Cruz' first campaign ads in English had mentioned his strong opposition to the Affordable Care Act and the executive actions President Obama took on immigration. Meanwhile, his first ad in Spanish left out these points, instead focusing on touching memories of his father's immigration from Cuba. Why, Palomarez asked, was the message different?"....

"During a Monday exchange with Megyn Kelly on Fox News, Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) took what some are calling a bold stance on legal immigration:

Kelly: “You’re more in line with other Republican candidates–”

Walker: “But the one thing they’re not saying–the other part of is it, we need to make sure as part of that, any future legal immigration system [that] goes forward has to account for American citizens, and the workers of this country, and their wages; to make sure that even with legal immigration, we respond to it in a way that doesn’t take jobs away from hard working Americans.”

Walker’s position is in line with a recent poll conducted by The Polling Company Inc., which asked: “If U.S. businesses have trouble finding workers, what should happen?”

75 percent of respondents, including 86% of black Americans and 71% of Hispanics, said they agreed with the statement:.............

.....Although Hispanic voters tend to heavily favor Democrats in national elections, these fluctuations indicate that a position like Scott Walker’s could find some support in that voting community." - Source

Cute. And for the record I am not affiliated with anyone. As I have noted, I have contributed significantly to Cruz but still have reservations and questions—amnesty and H1B. Anyway, don’t you think repeating the same talking points and links over and over and over again is a bit tiring? Maybe saying something new and original is in order.

It is not a matter of trust. It is a matter of who will give them free stuff.

Oh really Miss/Mrs Sanchez. The Democratic Party looks at all Hispanics as one giant group that thinks and votes the same. They don’t see that many Hispanics are successful and gaining in wealth and prosperity. On the contrary, they see a group that is downtrodden and needing the Democratic Party’s “assistance”.

Wow! This thread got hijacked.

No one pointed out that blacks certainly voted for a “ black” because he was black.

I am looking forward to the election of Cruz.

One election night, after being declared winner, I want to hear a reporter ask Cruz what is his goal for the next four years as President. And his response:

"To crush your enemies -- See them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their girlymen!"

I work to be current. I do use older articles to clarify things that often are omitted or conflicting, as well as to put things into context and spark debate.

Please direct me to your posted articles; I'm always willing to learn.

"It’s conventional wisdom that the 2016 Republican presidential race is at such an early stage that the polls don’t matter. They’re just a measurement of name recognition at this point, some observers say, and the only people really paying attention to the campaign are reporters and hard-core party activists.

Maybe that was true in earlier years. But it doesn’t seem to be the case now. “One thing about this election — Republicans are paying attention,” says a GOP pollster not affiliated with any campaign. “They are very concerned about who the nominee is going to be, and the idea that what a candidate says now doesn’t matter could not be further from the truth.”

Look at the recent CNN/ORC poll. First of all, it’s a huge field, and no candidate dominates — Jeb Bush is in the lead with just 17 percent. But nearly all the respondents surveyed have picked a candidate to support; add together every candidate’s little share of the vote and the total nears 100 percent, with few undecided.......

This year’s field seems much more stable at an earlier time. Yes, Kasich might enter the race — he certainly sounded that way recently in New Hampshire — and yes, perhaps another candidate will give it a try, too. But the basic structure of the Republican field seems nearly set.

And strong, too. Back in 2011 and 2012, it was common to hear Republicans complain about the weakness of their field. Some complain today — some always do — but the fact is the 2016 GOP field is a pretty impressive group. Governors with solid records, senators who have made their mark in the Senate, plus intriguing figures who come from outside the world of politics.

Not all of them will make it even to the Iowa caucuses. And they’ll drop off like flies after that. The key thing for the winning candidate is to realize that he will have to be able to assemble a coalition of those voters who support other candidates in the current 14-candidate field. That’s what it will take to win....."

Senators Running for President Face a Delicate Balancing Act

Ted Cruz tiptoes around immigration at Hispanic business event ".....Cruz’s anecdote again left things open to interpretation. At the time he offered his citizenship amendment, The New York Times described it as Cruz seeking a “middle ground” between full citizenship and mass deportation in which undocumented immigrants could still work legally in America.

On Wednesday, however, a spokesman for Cruz, Brian Phillips, clarified to msnbc on Twitter that this interpretation was incorrect and Cruz merely offered the amendment as an exercise to prove Democrats’ obstinacy on citizenship. It was not an endorsement of the work permit component of the bill that his amendment left intact.

“Cruz’s amendment had nothing to do with that issue,” Phillips said....."

You are not the only one Reno. I started pointing this out when she takes a grip to someone, anyone, the MO is the same. She challenges you to prove it knowing you don’t have the time to because she knows it is so pervasive.

If you want a real inside look, if you can spend the time, she did exactly the same thing with Rick Perry in the last go round until the pressure finally caused him to forget his talking points and his meltdown ensued.

She then disappeared for a while. Will the same happen here? I predict it is likely because Walker has has his transformations on issues like immigration, abortion, and most importantly the Constitution.

What is most obvious to me is that she will make a post and then answer herself with a whole litany of pre-formatted html responses knowing full well that it looks like other people are responding before opening the thread. It takes a lot of time for just anyone to peck out the code in the long dissertations she posts as answers and I wager her posts and self responses are not impulsive but purposely arranged astroturf.

But, that is my opinion and I am entitled to it just as she is hers. We just have to be discernible enough to recognize it for what it is.

Rubio lied to my face from his heart when he was running against Charlie Crist. His lie was exposed with the Gang of 8.

For now, I support Cruz because he needs no talking points but I am guarded because of Rubio. He says what he means and means what he says to date. Doesn’t waiver. On the H1B issue I too have reservations but that offer was made in the throws of the Gang of 8 debate in the Senate and he knew that amendment would kill it and also that it did not have a snowballs chance in hell of getting enacted.

All must remember, he is a seasoned litigant before the USSC and in such knows how to take an issue and use it to strategize an argument. Because of his not addressing the issue right now, he has a reason and a time for it that will become all too clear when he does.

There’s another issue in the Wisconsin state legislature that’s comming up here which goes back to the depression daze known as prevailing wage. Any public civic project construction must to be priced out at the top union wage. That also includes any grants and donations (including donated labor) from civic minded individuals or groups for any project they’re offering their particular area .

It was expected to sail through but the heavy hitters in the road construction racket amongst other groups are fighting any change. The change would allow smaller local contractors to submit much lower bids which in return would reduce costs.

Walker had better park his campaign bus. Head back home and do a little campaigning here if he wants to put this needed reform in place .

Here are some points directly from the Cruz website. Although it does not mention H1B specifically, here is how he addresses immigration as a whole.

Joined Texas and 25 other states in a lawsuit to stop President Obama’s illegal executive amnesty.

Authored legislation to triple the size of the U.S. Border Patrol.

Authored legislation to streamline and simplify our legal immigration system by consolidating segmented visas, creating real and transparent caps, eliminating the diversity visa lottery, and treating all immigrants equally by eliminating the per-country caps.

Urged the strictest enforcement of laws punishing those with prior felony convictions who entered the country illegally in a U.S. Supreme Court Brief in Lopez v. Gonzales.

Walker said he's been back weekly. In between the 2 long standing trade missions he's gone on this year, the 2015-17 budget he's hammering out, interviews, fundraising and giving talks around the country, he even found time to kiss a sea lion yesterday at the Milwaukee County Zoo, and it's the start of fishing season (he might have his line in the water right now).
