State Department reportedly deems mission to rescue Americans in Yemen too risky

The Wall Street Journal, citing a State Department official, reports that any evacuation point designated in a country where an Al Qaeda affiliate is active and an unstable security picture puts Americans and any U.S. military assets involved at risk.

Instead, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf has pointed to an online system where Americans stranded in Yemen can register to receive updates on opportunities to leave the country. The department has also talked to other countries about Americans joining their rescue missions, she said.

The decision of saving Americans puts U.S. authorities in a tight spot. They must choose between rescuing Americans abroad or becoming a target for armed groups, including an Al Qaeda branch and anti-American Houthi rebels.

Usually, the journal says, the U.S. evacuates citizens when commercial methods of transport are cut off. However, the State Department made clear that no such operation was in the works for Yemen, where airports have been bombed and seaports are closed to commercial traffic.

Well, the dumb ass twit harfed another one.

Why don't they just hire Minnie Mouse or Petunia Pig to be the spokesperson?

I'm embarrassed for my country.

And that pretty much says it all in describing the obama administration and today's military leadership.

This brilliant action by the State Department qualifies John (he was in Vietnam) Kerry to be president. Stupid moves that jeopardize the lives of Americans abroad are resume enhancements for that crowd.

Whew. I was worried there for a minute. /s

Hey, all you Americans stranded in Yemen. Which ones of you voted for Obama? Congratulations on your candidate winning the election.

We intend to amnesty all these invaders and make them citizens.

Yet we do NOTHING to help our own genuine countrymen.

It used to be that one of the primary roles of the national government was protecting Americans in extremis overseas. Now, if you get in harm's way, you can expect the Ambassador Stevens treatment. The national government's responsibility has been...reset.

I don't understand why with all of the technology NSA has to spy on law-abiding citizens, those capabilities couldn't be used overseas to DISINTEGRATE anyone who gets in the way of the US military evacuating our citizens.

Beyond disgusted.

Is this online system anything like the online obamacare marketplace system?

Why not also a hashtag for these stranded, huh..?

Even Jimmy Carter had the CIA rescue some of the Americans stranded in Tehran, yet now NOTHING is done.

As in Benghazi.

I wonder what percentage of “American citizens” that are there are ones who just got birthright citizenship and then live in countries of origin until they need evacuating and then the ole US taxpayer pays.

#bringbackourcitizens ?

It is really sad when a nation won’t support it’s allies
OR it’s citizens. How far we have fallen in six years.
Fallen or pushed?

It's a good thing al quaeda doesn't have computers, or they would be able to also sign up and receive updates on how Americans can exit.

Just another tool used by the communists to destroy America. Destroy confidence in Americas ability to take care of its citizenry.
