The Maryland prosecutor who brought charges Friday against six Baltimore police officers within hours of receiving a medical examiner’s report on the death of Freddie Gray is facing accusations that her swift action was over zealous and perhaps politically motivated.
The Baltimore police union leader, Gene Ryan, made the most clear-cut accusations, after he raised concerns about Marilyn Mosby being married to City Councilman Nick Mosby.
“It is clear that your husband’s political future will be impacted, for better or worse, by the outcome of your investigation,” Ryan, president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3, wrote Mosby after her Friday announcement.
He also argued Mosby has a conflict of interest because she received campaign contributions from Gray’s family attorney William Murphy. Ryan asked that she appoint a special prosecutor to avoid the appearance of impropriety or of violating the rules of professional responsibility. …

Being a convicted felon, on probation, in a known drug sales area, and fleeing police is not illegal.
As to the spring-assisted knife, the same police report also said that it was a switchblade. The DA said it wasn't. No one has seen the knife, so I'll reserve judgment on that one.
If this is supposed to quiet the mob, I don't think it will. If this is supposed to result in a conviction of Officer Goodson for his charged crime of "second-degree depraved-heart murder", I doubt that also. This will probably do as much for Marilyn Mosby's political career as it did for Angela Corey's.

You apparently aren't familiar with how criminal laws are written. A common charge in Maryland is "Unauthorized Use of livestock". This is the charge for driving a stolen vehicle. The switchblade charge doesn't necessarily mean he had a switchblade. It is a categorical charge that includes assisted-opening knives.

And RE: the livestock charge, this would be equivalent to the prosecutor saying, of a car thief, "that guy wasn't using stolen livestock, so the arrest is illegal", just because he was in a stolen car instead of on stolen livestock. She is playing word games.

Good for Ryan, but I believe that M. Mosby has already given the appearance of impropriety, and violated rules of professional responsibility, as well as reckless and malicious prosecution for political gain.
M. Mosby needs to be removed from office and lose her license to practice law. I also think she should suffer financial ruin and sent to prison. Regrettably, those things will likely never happen to this rat, but they should.

Can someone please tell me what roles were played by the officers who have been charged by the State Attorney? Where were they in relation to Freddie Gray and what did they do? Were they some of the officers at the van when he was put in the van? What about the bicycle cops? He seemed to be hurt when he was wrestled to the ground by them. Are they part of the 6?

This is a pretty vaguely-worded law (compared to switchblade laws in other jurisdictions). There is a difference between "automatic spring" knives and "spring-assisted" knives, so it's not clear whether a "spring-assisted" knife would fall under the statute. It would depend on whether the spring assist mechanism falls under the "other device" part of the law.

We then turn to the courts and the common practice in the Maryland criminal justice system to determine how persons are charged when they are found in possession of an assisted-opening knife that is not a switchblade. I argue they are charged under the switchblade law.
Just like persons driving a stolen vehicle are charged under the livestock law.
In DC, entering a dwelling, at night, with the intent to commit any other crime, is Burglary I. Unless it's a houseboat. Then it's always Burglary II. Why did they write it that way? Beats me.
There are nuances to criminal law.

At this point, for your own sanity, you just have to let this play out. We will have to hear this story 1739 more times before this is anything near over, but the fact of the matter is that these cops stand grossly, grossly overcharged. I don’t believe they will be convicted of much of anything if they are tried outside of Baltimore. This charging was done as a matter of crowd control. Dershowitz has it exactly right. I found it interesting [not really] that Judge Jeannine Pirro is in this case really deferential to her female counterpart and supportive of her strong stand. Yeah, she’s strong. And wrong. 85%+ of these charges will be thrown out. Cops lives, ruined, riots, deferred.
I am just grateful I don’t own a TV set because this summer is going to be overflowing with wall to wall riot coverage.

the police chief was being interviewed on CNN....he is tough lean man....said something to effect that, he was hired to clean up the PD, and would not tolerate any misdeeds...but 6 of his staff, according to DA, violated just about every rule in the book...
Once she over saw the release of the guilty and sent the innocent to be crucified, she should have called for a bowl of water to wash her hands of the matter. But hey, even Pontius Pilate knew who was innocent and who was not.
