I suppose there's a lesson in this story somewhere.
I guess there was no dog for them to shoot.
Facts have go come out in the wash. Meanwhile, AP has a narrative.
Some people don’t like their donut break to be interrupted.
Absolutely. But this story seems pretty balanced. The author makes it clear that the homeowner was terrified, and also that the cops really didn't know who was who until it was too late. It did not seem like an anti-gun piece.
If I'm on a first-name basis with cleaners or cops, it can really help, and it almost never hurts.
Introduce yourself and remember names.

I've heard it said: there's no situation that the cops can't make worse.
Perhaps that's the lesson?
Yup, with rare exceptions. But as this case make clear, those exceptions are VERY rare.
One however recently happened in Garland, TX...
Police work would be safer for if criminals were put to death after the third felony.
All of ‘em.
It’ll take a lot of stress off the cops - and citizens. Might make everyone calmer...
The local constabulary know who I am, and I know who they are.
This is unlikely to happen to me because folks know who I am and I know who they are.

Definitely good advice.

The lesson is finish your business before calling the cops.
Do not invite them over to referee!
They may not be clear on who is shirts and who is skins...
That could take a couple of weeks and a pretty good memory in Houston.
That part is manageable.
And if it's really that big, you might consider moving to a smaller town. ;)

On police radio calls released Thursday, there is confusion about the identity of the man who was shot.
“It’s unknown if he’s part of the shooters or the victim,” an officer can be heard saying after an ambulance is called to treat a man with a gunshot wound to the neck.

Well Hell’s Bells, if you’re unsure by all means fire away. Stupid action by at least one of these deputy dogs.
The article also said that the homeowner is black and the two deputies are white.
The Police substation in my part of town is so large the cops don’t know everyone that works there. Especially with three shifts so how could I possibly know them all?
I know the one dry cleaner that I use so I am not going to waste my time meeting the other twenty five within five miles of my house.
Your concept is conceivable in a tiny town with say one diner but not in even a medium sized city.
As to moving this is my home born and raised. If I retired before I die and have the money to live in the county then I might move.
Bingo. If no dog, shoot the homeowner. On another thought, why tell him to ‘drop his gun’? You don’t ‘drop’ a gun; you carefully lay it down.
