USPS reports $1.5B loss

The U.S. Postal Service on Friday reported a net loss of $1.5 billion during the first three months of this year, noting that while more people are using its shipping and package services, it’s costly to do and revenues from other products have declined.

The Postal Service is an independent agency that receives no tax dollars for its day-to-day operations but is subject to congressional control. It has asked to end most Saturday deliveries, a request that was blocked by Congress amid opposition by postal unions and others.

“And it is funny how DHL, FedEx and UPS survive just fine on what the USPS is describing as a business with “marginal” profits, isn’t it.”

You might want to call FedEx and see if they will deliver a letter from Nome, Alaska to Tupelo, Mississippi for 49 cents.

Is that meant as an excuse to justify continued government involvement?

Do commodities that are basic necessities cost more in Nome because of its location, too?

It is a bad a business model.

And yes, goods and services cost more in Nome than they do in Dallas.

Today (in my town, at least) the mailmen are collecting food for their food drive.
So apparently, they have some free time on their hands (while they're on the clock).

Yet for a “bad business model”, the USPS claims it can make money from first-class mail.

It’s not hard to conceive that letters in and out of Nome AK would be a viable business when charging what the traffic will bear. But unless and until government is swept out of the way, nobody will know.

raise the price of junk mail,...”

Awesome idea. If they would make everyone who uses USPS for anything pay first class rates, it would be great. IMO we can do with home deliveries a maximum of two days a week, particularly since anything important can generally be delivered by EFT or email and usually does.

Most days everything I receive goes from the mailbox to the trash. If I need to mail anything personal, I use one of the local mail services. All of our business mail goes by email or is processed through some on-line system.

Businesses could probably do with delivery on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and could probably could do without the Wednesday delivery. Checks can go to a lockbox PO and be deposited. Takes some doing to set it up but then it’s a win for the business.

Employee perks and PENSIONS for retirees are killing them. No amount of ‘Forever’ stamps will fix it.

I’ve said it here often. Get rid of 75% of the people who do not EVER touch a piece of mail. Clerks and carriers are for the most part fine. Very good workers. Too many social programs. Too many committees. Too many postmasters(but I hear that is changing).

“All the mail I receive these days are fliers and advertising. All the monthly bills I have to pay are either auto-pay or I authorize via internet accounts.”

Tuesday is garbage day here! It’s the day when I can go directly from the curbside mail box to the curbside recycling bin. Direct mail advertising is a methodology that has long outlived it’s usefulness. Actually, by extension, we have pretty much outlived the usefulness of the USPS. It another issue for a Convention of the States to address.

I call our deliverer the Multi-Million-Dollar Merry Mailman. As much as I like him, I know what awaits upon retirement. That's another reason they're going bust,

Good point...the for profit competitors don't have to fully fund their pension obligations every year either.

That would be 100 million of us each buying one $15 stamp just to cover the loss for the 3 months.

You think he's going to make multi-millions on retirement? We had one clerk that worked for decades, at the top end of her pay made $60k approximately, and retired, living on $12k. I was shocked. Two other long time city letter carriers retired and have new jobs to help get by. It's not as lucrative as you might think.

I welcome the 3rd class mail... I open it up, take the business reply mail envelopes and use them for sealing up a “wallet dump” worth of receipts so everything is together for itemizing taxes. The rest of the mailing is used as firestarter for the woodstove.

My niece must’ve been doing something right. Lower level, not a carrier or management.
