Twin Cities minorities face longer commute times, report notes

The Twin Cities have long been considered one of the best places in the country to live when it comes to health, happiness and job opportunities, but the disparities for racial minorities are striking. A new report looks at yet another area where the experiences of whites and non-whites generally diverge: commute times. The 12-page study finds that black and Asian transit users in the Twin Cities spend 138 and 146 more hours each year, respectively, getting to and from work than white drivers do. For Latinos, the "transit time penalty" increased to 173 hours -- the equivalent of losing 4.5 work weeks annually in commute. "That means that, for a month a year more than white drivers, transit commuters of color are unavailable for working, helping children with homework, helping parents get to the doctor, running errands, volunteering in their communities, or participating in their churches," states the study.

Maybe they wouldn’t face a long commute if business didn’t fear opening up shop in their neighborhoods.

They should move to Philly where the trains are faster.

So the segregated trains and buses in the Twin Cities run fast for whites and slow for everyone else?

3 more hours a week. 30 minutes a day. 15 minutes each way. Oh the humanity.

There’s a difference between driving yourself and riding the bus. My home (where my parents lived) is 200 miles from Norfolk (where I live and was stationed while in the Navy). When leaving my car with them for deployments, it would take me 4 hours to drive down there, and almost 6 to return by Trailways bus. Darn bus stops for ANYTHING!!!

What a bogus study. It is comparing transit commuters to drivers. Transit commute is always going to slower ( unless in a place like New York ). Does the black driver coming from the same area have a better time than a black transit commuter? Chances are , yes. It has nothing to do with race.

it would have been cheaper to buy everyone who is ‘poor’ and carless a decent used car than to build the light rail green line.

What is the Asian transit? Never heard of it before, but it sounds racist and exclusionary.

Duration of trip is not determined by race, it is determined by mode of transportation.

Another great example of white privilege.

I feel so guilty, I’m gonna sell my Mustang GT and walk to work...

Yet the Twin Cities Metropolitan Council is forcing far distant suburbs to provide more subsidized housing for these same minorities that would mean even further commutes.

When I was poor and took public transportation. I looked into how long a ride it would be before I interviewed for the position. Poor and stupid! Pity!
