“There is no difference between Confederate flags and swastikas here....”

Crap, I hope Uncle Fritz doesn’t read this.
Memorial Day weekend at his place is already stressful enough..

I think you’re right. Though she should be a bit more careful before her pieces are published.

You are correct. If you look carefully at Lincoln's words, it is clear that he was honoring the Union dead (and the living men who fought for the Union) only.

The Confederate dead were removed and reburied elsewhere (where they came from if possible) although a very few remained buried at Gettysburg because they had been misidentified as Union dead. The cemetery that was being dedicated in Nov. 1863 was intended to be for the Union dead only, not both sides.

Hi Kaslin. You don’t know me but thanks for all the great posts over the years. Anyway, regarding the thread subject, while being a little off topic, my great, great grandfather paid $200 to the Union to avoid fighting in the war. I’m proud and embarrassed at the same time.

The war on Southern pride is simply part of the ongoing agenda to emasculate white people, specifically white Southerners.

The goal is to divest them from the political process and the public sphere.

And hey, look: it’s working.

I, however, refuse to turn so easily.

Fascinating: They kicked out the Southerners who sacrificed for their Nation? That's seems low class and petty.

In Nov. 1863 the war was still going on and the outcome was uncertain. If the Democrats had won the 1864 election, maybe the war would have ended without a Union victory and with the Confederacy being allowed to remain a separate country. So it isn't surprising that Lincoln and the others involved in planning the cemetery wanted it to honor the Union dead only.

There are Confederates buried in the North--for example at Camp Chase in what is now the western part of Columbus, Ohio. One of the Confederates buried there was the first cousin of my great-great-grandfather (who himself was a Southern Unionist, who survived his 6 months of service by 40 years).
